DNVN - On September 25, AstraZeneca Vietnam, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and Plan International Vietnam, organized the "Communication Day for Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases" - a key activity in phase 2 of the Youth Health Program (YHP).

This is part of AstraZeneca’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness among Vietnamese adolescents about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention and promote healthy behaviors in schools and communities. Phase 2 of the Youth Health Programme, which will be implemented from September 2023, aims to expand its impact by reaching more adolescents in disadvantaged areas, increasing education on NCD risk factors and empowering young advocates to proactively manage their own health.

“Communication Day for Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases” was held at Lien Ha High School, Dong Anh District, Hanoi. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of NCD prevention, encourage healthy lifestyles and enhance cooperation between schools, students and families.

Attending the event were Mr. Nguyen Nho Huy, Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education - Ministry of Education and Training, Mr. Atul Tandon, General Director of AstraZeneca Vietnam Co., Ltd., representatives of Plan International, teachers, students and parents of the school.

Students participated in a variety of interactive activities to educate them on the importance of preventive measures, including physical activity and a balanced diet. Also within the framework of this initiative, through Plan International Vietnam, AstraZeneca sponsored the construction of a basketball court to encourage students to practice sports, an important factor in preventing NCDs.

The first phase of the Adolescent Health Programme, which was implemented from January 2019 to June 2022 in Hanoi, aims to improve the physical and mental health of adolescents by raising awareness of behaviours that can lead to NCDs. The programme focuses on disadvantaged areas, aiming to empower adolescents to make healthy decisions about their health.

The results of the first phase include: Direct communication about NCDs to 49,365 adolescents in schools, universities and industrial zones. Helping more than 3 million people indirectly access knowledge about NCD prevention; training more than 538 communicators to lead health promotion efforts in the community. At the same time, many training courses were organized for communicators, teachers and health workers to improve their ability to respond to risks from NCDs.

Mr. Atul Tandon, General Director of AstraZeneca Vietnam said: “The Youth Health Program demonstrates our deep commitment to society by supporting adolescents to form healthy behaviors throughout their lives.”

These results demonstrate the important role of the Program in building awareness and promoting youth-led communication in communities.

Phase 2 of the Adolescent Health Programme (2023-2025) aims to build on the successes of the first phase by expanding the reach and enhancing the positive impacts of the programme. The objectives include: Reaching more adolescents, especially in disadvantaged areas, to provide knowledge on NCD prevention and empowering them to make informed, healthy decisions.

Partner with the Ministry of Education and Training to advocate for health policy changes to integrate adolescent health education into the curriculum.

Strengthen youth-led communication on NCD prevention, including contributing to the Vietnam National Strategy for NCD Prevention and Control (2025-2035).

"At AstraZeneca, we are not only focused on developing innovative medicines but also on building healthier futures. The Adolescent Health Programme reflects our deep commitment to society by supporting adolescents to adopt healthy behaviours throughout their lives. The success we have achieved in Vietnam, with thousands of adolescents directly reached and empowered, has inspired us to continue to expand this positive impact. By investing in the health of today's young people, we are investing in the sustainable development and well-being of the entire country. This next phase of the programme will reach more adolescents, especially in disadvantaged communities, to ensure that every adolescent has the opportunity to live a healthy and happy life," said Mr. Atul Tandon, General Director of AstraZeneca Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Nho Huy, Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education - Ministry of Education and Training said: "We see initiatives like the Youth Health Program as having great impact and are in line with Vietnam's national strategy to ensure the health and well-being of Vietnamese youth. Equipping students with the knowledge and tools to prevent these diseases from an early age is important, in the context of increasing risks of NCDs".
