On September 26, Quang Nam Central General Hospital informed that doctors from the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department of this hospital had just successfully performed emergency surgery on a patient who was stabbed in the heart and was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
Accordingly, at 10:35 p.m. on September 25, patient BTH (30 years old, from Hon Dat district, Kien Giang province) was admitted to the hospital with difficulty breathing with a 2cm wound in the chest area, immobility, cold limbs, lethargy, unmeasurable pulse and blood pressure, low SPO2. The results of the emergency ultrasound detected blood in the pleura and pericardium.

After placing a temporary drainage tube in the pleural cavity, a lot of blood was seen. It was determined that this was a complex penetrating chest wound, suspected of penetrating the heart, the patient's condition was very dangerous, the progress was very unpredictable, the on-duty team immediately raised the red alert, mobilized all human resources to participate, actively resuscitated and transferred the patient to the operating room.
Doctors urgently opened the chest, examined the pleural cavity and found a lot of bleeding, a torn right pericardium, and a 2cm wide wound penetrating into the right atrium. Doctors proceeded to suture the heart wound, remove all the old blood, and actively resuscitate and control vital signs. After surgery, the patient is now conscious and his health is gradually improving.
Dr. Nguyen Luong Tan, Head of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared: “A penetrating chest wound is a very serious injury, affecting breathing, cardiovascular system... If not treated promptly, the patient will fall into a state of irreversible shock, which can lead to death or leave serious sequelae for the patient.”
