As the only one of three brothers to go to university, Duong often blamed himself for bringing more burden to his family.
In this year's early graduation of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Tran The Duong, a student of the Faculty of Automation, School of Electrical and Electronics, had the highest academic score with 3.89/4.0. According to Duong, this result is not only due to his own efforts but also thanks to the efforts of his whole family. Born in Bac Ninh, Duong's father is a construction worker, and his mother has a mental illness that reduces her ability to work. In recent years, her mother's illness has worsened, and Duong's father has been supporting the family's finances alone. Due to circumstances, Duong's two older brothers also dropped out of school to work as factory workers. As a good student, in 2019, Duong passed the entrance exam to the Faculty of Automation Engineering of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. While his friends were happy to be admitted to university, Duong felt worried. "The tuition fee of Bach Khoa at that time was 15 million VND/semester. “I feel guilty for putting extra pressure on myself, making my parents have to pay for both my tuition and living expenses,” Duong said. But it was also Duong’s father who encouraged him to pursue his dream, and he would find a way to make ends meet. In order for Duong to have the opportunity to go to school, his father had to borrow money from the commune’s scholarship fund. On the day he enrolled at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, to save money, Duong took the bus and registered to stay in the dormitory. At that time, Duong weighed only 50kg, often choosing meals that cost 15-20 thousand to save money for his parents. Duong’s only goal at that time was to try to study well. “I didn’t dare to work part-time because I was afraid that the money would only solve my immediate worries, but would affect the long-term process,” Duong said. On the other hand, the male student also admitted that he was an introvert, did not like to stand out, so he spent all his time studying and considered it a top priority.
Passionate about research, since his 4th year, The Duong has started to intend to study abroad. From the sharing of teachers and seniors, right before graduation, Duong managed to apply for a scholarship to study for a master's degree at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). A professor here has agreed to guide Duong during his studies in Korea, however, the male student is still waiting for the scholarship approval from the school. Currently, Duong is still in the process of conducting a research paper under the guidance of Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Phuong Nam, lecturer of the Department of Automation, School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering with the goal of being published in Q1 magazine. Directly guiding and accompanying Duong, Associate Professor Dao Phuong Nam assessed that among the students he has guided, Duong may not be the best, but he is one of the most diligent and hardworking students. "It is these qualities that have helped Duong achieve some achievements during his student years," Associate Professor Nam said. Becoming a student with an Excellent graduation score, the highest among the students graduating early this year, but Duong feels somewhat regretful because he did not have many experiences during his student years. Therefore, the male student hopes that studying abroad will help him have more opportunities and new changes to become more mature. "I hope to have the opportunity to study in Korea to develop my expertise, then return to develop my career in Vietnam," Duong said.

Therefore, in class, Duong often chooses to sit in the third row or higher to better absorb the lectures. The male student also maintains the same intensity of studying and taking exams as when he was preparing for the high school graduation exam. “Many friends say that getting into Polytechnic is difficult, but I really like it. Of course, the general subjects in the first year are mostly theoretical, the teachers write continuously without stopping, so the amount of knowledge in one session is quite huge. Therefore, I often have the habit of reading the lessons in advance so as not to miss knowledge or be “shocked” by new content”. In addition to the materials provided by teachers, Duong is also always proactive in searching for documents, reading more reference books at home and abroad to better understand each issue. “In fact, the knowledge in the textbook and the content provided by teachers is still quite sketchy. Therefore, to understand thoroughly, I still need to dig deeper. I often search for content on the Internet in English to enrich my course materials”. According to Duong, this way of learning will make the lectures easier to understand and he will also absorb knowledge faster. Thanks to his strength in Math, Duong always got A's in Algebra, Analysis... - subjects that are usually the nightmare of Polytechnic students. During 4.5 years, The Duong received 6 scholarships from the school, so he can manage his own tuition expenses.Vietnamnet.vn
