Never think of the word drop out
Nguyen Thanh Nghi is currently a 12A6 student at Hoang Dieu High School (Ward 4, Soc Trang City, Soc Trang Province). Since childhood, he has suffered from a rare disease that causes his legs and arms to be abnormally shrunken. His spine is curved, and the high mass of flesh on his back clearly affects his sitting posture. Sitting for long periods of time listening to teachers lecture is always a big challenge for this disabled male student.
His disabled body and the high mass of flesh on his back make it very difficult for Nghi to sit and study.
Faced with Nghi's difficulties, the school installed planks on the walkways leading to the schoolyard, toilets and common rooms. Only class 12A6 was arranged on the ground floor so that Nghi could move easily. Nghi's house was about 4 km from the school. In the morning, his father took him to school, then went to work, and picked him up at noon. Nghi's mother was a middle school teacher, so around 7:45 a.m., her grandmother came to school to help him go to the toilet. Nghi could only do some light work, most of his daily activities required help from relatives.
Nghi’s hands cannot lift a 1 kg object, but luckily he still has feeling. From this small hope, Nghi tries hard to practice writing and using a laptop. Seeing going to school every day as a joy, Nghi is always optimistic and longs to one day repay his grandparents and parents who have suffered so much for him.
Nghi is always optimistic and open with friends.
"I was afraid of being behind my friends, so after class, I took the time to review at home. I believe that, despite their disadvantaged fate, if they try, people with disabilities can still take control of their lives. That is the motivation and belief that makes me never think about dropping out of school," Nghi shared.
An inspirational example for many
With 11 consecutive years of being an excellent student, Nghi gradually shows that disability is no longer a barrier on his journey to conquering letters. Notably, from that difficult beginning, he has continuously risen, becoming an inspiring example for many people. In just 2 years of grade 10 and 11, Nghi received more than a dozen provincial awards, such as: third prize in the handheld calculator math competition, third prize in the excellent student in information technology, second prize in young information technology, first prize in the youth and children's creativity competition...
Nghi's mobility depends entirely on an electric wheelchair.
In addition, as a team leader, Nghi and his friends successfully implemented the School Managei system - smart school management software. The outstanding feature of this software is to digitize on the internet the management and synthesis of issues related to students, learning, and inter-grade competition movements instead of paper documents. The product is certified as a scientific and technical contribution to Soc Trang province.
Nghi added that from the suggestions of many people, for the past 3 months, he has been implementing a project to teach programming, algorithms, and web design via Google Meet every night. This is where Nghi shares knowledge, skills, and experiences in computer programming to serve those who want to improve their qualifications, review for excellent student exams, young computer science, and apply for jobs. Currently, there are about 50 students studying. Thanks to that, even though he is still studying, Nghi has an income of about 8 million VND/month.
For 11 consecutive years, Nghi has been an excellent student.
Mr. Phung Kim Phu, Principal of Hoang Dieu High School, said that the school was very honored and proud when Nghi was recently one of 35 outstanding disabled youth nationwide to be honored in the "Shining Vietnamese Willpower" program in 2023. For the past two years, this disabled male student has always been in the top 10 best students in the school. Nghi's spirit has been used as motivation by his friends and teachers to overcome his difficulties. The school is also connecting with universities that have study programs suitable for Nghi's circumstances, to help him realize his dream of becoming an IT engineer.
