On September 13, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on three Russian entities that Washington accused of being involved in destabilizing actions abroad, including the Rossiya Segodnya media group and its CEO Dmitry Kisilyov, the TV-Novosti television network, and the non-governmental organization Eurasia and its Director Nelly Parutenko.
The sanctions target two individuals and three entities “in connection with Russia’s destabilizing activities abroad,” the Treasury Department said in a statement, accusing the individuals and entities of engaging in “cyber-enabled” news operations in regions such as Europe, Africa, North and South America.
US authorities have insisted that they are not targeting the two individuals and three Russian entities “for the content of their reporting,” but rather for “alleged covert influence activities” that “do not belong in the journalistic profession.” Washington said the three media outlets had closely coordinated efforts assigned by senior Russian officials.
In a development related to the conflict in Ukraine, during talks in Washington the same day, US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine and condemned the cooperation between Russia, Iran, North Korea and China.
The minutes of the meeting released by the White House said: “The two leaders had an in-depth discussion on a range of foreign policy issues of mutual concern. They reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine.”
In addition, Mr. Biden and Mr. Starmer also discussed US-UK cooperation in the fields of clean energy and advanced technology, the AUKUS trilateral security agreement with Australia as well as opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic relations.
