Victim or perpetrator?

At the discussion, "My Wolf" Thu Quynh said that as Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of the Youth Theater, she is accompanying the Central Youth Union in the campaign "Civilized behavior in cyberspace".

As a famous person with a large social media presence (with a fanpage with hundreds of thousands of followers), Thu Quynh has also been a victim of fake news and cyber violence.

"A scandal suddenly fell from the sky, forcing Quynh to deal with a media crisis. I say it "fell from the sky" because it was something I didn't cause, but had to deal with," Thu Quynh shared.

But Thu Quynh overcame it, first of all thanks to the companionship of her family, the trust of her friends, the encouragement of her fans, as well as early seeking help from the authorities.

Thu Quynh said: "Recently, in a discussion at Thai Nguyen University, I asked a question, have you ever turned yourself into a gullible person on social networks. From my own experience, I realized that not only students but anyone who uses social networks is at risk of turning themselves into a gullible person.

Because of that gullibility, users will also unintentionally become the perpetrators in spreading false information. The line between victims and perpetrators is very fragile. That's why we are sitting here to find solutions to help each other, to help students escape this vicious circle."

According to Thu Quynh, she strongly agrees with the approach that the Central Youth Union and the Ministry of Education and Training are taking, which is to start influencing awareness through different forms of education for students in the process of participating in social networks.

"It is important that each person equips themselves with knowledge and personal awareness to protect themselves on social networks, promptly reporting to the authorities to resolve the incident. Be steadfast! If we do nothing wrong, we have nothing to fear. Let's fight against negativity on social networks. The important thing is not to let our spirit be affected. Instead of going online to argue and making the story go too far, let's ask the authorities to seek timely protection and support," Thu Quynh shared.

Need to proactively equip knowledge of online behavior

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhat Linh, Deputy Head of the Central Youth Union's Propaganda Department, people are the most important factor in solutions to prevent and combat negative influences on cyberspace. Therefore, students need to proactively equip themselves with skills to protect themselves and those around them. There are 3 supports that students need to think of immediately when encountering problems: family, school (homeroom teacher, union and association officers in the school), and psychological consultants (many universities have this team).

"Those who share and spread false information on social networks will be punished according to the Cyber Security Law. This helps limit the spread of bad information by 90-95%. To have grounds to handle the case, the victim is responsible for providing information so that the authorities can have timely solutions," said Mr. Nguyen Nhat Linh.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that before the Central Youth Union launched the campaign "Civilized behavior in cyberspace", the Ministry of Education and Training had advised the Prime Minister to issue many decisions on civilized behavior in cyberspace.

It is undeniable that the Internet has made positive contributions to the development of human knowledge, but it is impossible not to notice its negative impacts on the younger generation. The education of students on how to behave online has been given attention, but we cannot be subjective because it affects many generations. Therefore, in addition to education and training providing knowledge, schools also need to help generations have civilized behavior in cyberspace.

"For each individual, we want to spread civilization in cyberspace to each young person, so we have integrated many programs on cyberspace safety into the training programs at universities. I also hope that those who participate in these programs will share and spread knowledge to others so that they are not taken advantage of by bad elements," said Mr. Dung.
