NHK. About 6,400 Japanese and US soldiers are participating in large-scale joint exercises in the two southeastern Japanese prefectures of Kyushu and Okinawa as well as the northern island of Hokkaido, with the aim of practicing the defense of remote islands.
Xinhua News Agency. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the Israeli government to "stop collective punishment against the people of the Gaza Strip" and said Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip "go beyond the scope of self-defense."

KHMER TIMES. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will lead a high-level delegation to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRI) in Beijing, China from October 17-18.
KPL. The number of dengue fever cases in Laos has increased to more than 30,000 cases , with 17 deaths. Oudomxay province in Northern Laos has the most patients with more than 5,000 cases, followed by the capital Ventiane with nearly 4,500 cases.
PTI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly stated India's desire to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and become the fourth Asian country to host the global sporting event.
MINT. India and Sri Lanka resumed ferry services that had been suspended for 40 years, with the opening of a ferry route between Nagapattinam on the east coast of India's Tamil Nadu state and Kankesanthurai near Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

GUARDIAN. Poles go to the polls in parliamentary elections in which the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party hopes to win a third term in power.

EURO NEWS. European Council President Charles Michel has announced that he will convene a virtual summit of EU leaders to discuss the Israel-Hamas war this week.
SKY NEWS. Britain still supports Israel's right to self-defence but calls on it to show restraint in any military action against Hamas to minimise harm to civilians, according to Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
TASS. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Ukraine's counter-offensive campaign had completely failed, but Kiev was preparing a new offensive campaign in some conflict areas and Russia would respond accordingly.
FRANCE 24. French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the mobilization of 7,000 soldiers to increase security patrols, after a knife attack at a school in Arras left one teacher dead and two seriously injured.
BBC. UK regulators have given Microsoft the go-ahead to buy Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard , paving the way for the biggest deal in the video game industry.
America
CNN. The US has arranged a ship to evacuate US citizens from the Israeli port of Haifa to the Cyprus port of Limassol today, October 16.
CBS. The US is concerned that the conflict between Israel and Hamas will escalate and that Iran is at risk of being directly involved in the conflict.

MSNBC. Republican lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have chosen Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, as their party's candidate for Speaker of the House.

APS. Algeria hosts the 20th African-Nordic Foreign Ministers' Meeting with the theme “African-Nordic countries: Strengthening dialogue based on common values” from October 16-18.
AHRAM. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Israel's response to the Hamas attack went beyond self-defense and amounted to collective punishment.

TVP WORLD. Officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo said on October 15 that at least 30 people drowned and 167 others were missing after a boat capsized on the Congo River late on October 13.

NZR. Former businessman Christopher Luxon has announced plans to form a new government, after his National Party won the election on October 14 in New Zealand.
ABC. According to preliminary results of the referendum on the proposal to recognize indigenous people in the Constitution, the majority of Australians do not accept the proposal.
SBS. Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia plans to launch more flights to repatriate citizens from Israel after two flights were cancelled on 14 October.
