A US destroyer operates in the Red Sea.
AFP news agency reported on March 6 that US forces shot down a missile and three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of Houthi forces in Yemen that were flying towards a US destroyer in the Red Sea.
"US Central Command (CENTCOM) intercepted an anti-ship ballistic missile and three one-way attack drones launched from Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen toward the USS Carney in the Red Sea," CENTCOM said in a statement.
The above action occurred between 3-5 pm on March 5 (Yemen time).
“There were no injuries or damage to the ship,” the statement said. The US later destroyed three anti-ship missiles and three unmanned boats in Houthi areas of Yemen.
Earlier in the day, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the force had targeted two US destroyers in the Red Sea "with multiple missiles and unmanned boats".
The Houthis have said they will not stop their attacks until Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are no longer under siege.
Yemen's Houthis began attacking ships in the Red Sea in November 2023, saying they were targeting ships linked to Israel in support of Gaza. The US and UK responded with strikes on Houthi areas. The Houthis later declared that US and UK interests were also "legitimate targets".
Months of Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have threatened vital maritime trade routes, while US and British raids have so far failed to stop them.
