The announcement comes a day after Canada's Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting an independent investigation into the explosion of the Titan mini-submarine, to determine the dangers and lack of controls of similar expeditions.

“Our primary goal is to prevent similar incidents from occurring by making the necessary recommendations to enhance maritime safety worldwide,” said Capt. Jason Neubauer, lead investigator for the U.S. Coast Guard.
Neubauer said the agency opened a maritime board investigation on Friday, and is working with the FBI to recover evidence, including salvage operations of debris from the seabed near the Titanic wreckage.
The findings will be shared with the International Maritime Organization and other groups “to help improve the safety framework for diving operations around the world,” he said.
Meanwhile, the US Coast Guard is contacting the families of the five people killed and investigators are "taking every precaution to protect the safety of any victims' bodies" in the incident.
