So, what should international standard English centers do to improve the quality of foreign teachers and build trust with parents?
Manage input recruitment, set high standards for qualifications
Because teacher input will contribute significantly to students' English output, the VUS Vietnam-USA Society English System highly values the quality of teachers right from the recruitment stage.
VUS representative shared that the system prioritizes recruiting teachers from countries where English is the main language, with a university degree, an international standard English teaching certificate (TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL), and documents required by law such as criminal records, health certificates, valid visas, in addition to some other professional requirements. Candidates must be qualified to pass many rounds of testing: preliminary interviews, interviews, trial lectures... to become teachers.
VUS has a team of multinational teachers, meeting the requirements for degrees and professional certificates.
After passing the recruitment round, teachers must participate in an initial training process with more than 15 topics on curriculum and teaching skills, as well as participate in internal professional development courses to improve teaching quality. "The training sessions are an opportunity for teachers to practice classroom management skills, improve teaching methods and activities suitable for students," said a VUS representative.
Currently, VUS has a team of more than 2,700 multinational teachers across the system. Of these, 100% have university degrees, international English teaching certificates (TESOL, CELTA or TEFL) and 15% of them have Master's or PhD degrees.
Being a teacher does not mean stopping learning.
To meet the requirements of English teaching, during their time working at VUS, teachers must attend training sessions on more than 255 different topics. There have been more than 150 training sessions on curriculum and teaching skills (Inquiry-based Learning; Teaching IELTS, Scaffolding and Concept Checking..) organized. At the same time, the system always coordinates with leading speakers from National Geographic Learning, Macmillan Education, Oxford University Press... to train teachers.
Mr. Andy Duenas - Senior Academic and Training Advisor from National Geographic Learning organized a training workshop for teachers at VUS in November 2022
Every year, VUS organizes the free VUS TESOL conference, thereby helping to improve professional qualifications and update modern educational trends, as well as creating opportunities to learn, exchange and expand networks in the English teacher community.
More than 3,200 Vietnamese and foreign teachers gathered at VUS TESOL 2023 to discuss global education trends.
At the same time, VUS also cooperated with Oxford University Press (OUP) to organize the Oxford Teacher's Academy (OTA) course to provide intensive training for VUS teachers on various topics such as New methods in teaching English to children (2014), Teaching English to Adult Learners (2017). The most recent topic is Mentoring Skills to support the development of leadership activities.
VUS's professional managers received certificates of completion of the Oxford Teachers' Academy intensive training course on Mentoring Skills
Not only teachers, but also teaching assistants must constantly improve their professional skills and pass a rigorous assessment process to become official teachers. The system continuously organizes specialized training activities such as: Workshops on classroom management skills, Service mindset, Workshops on communication and interaction skills with children (Praising children properly to help them learn effectively, Confidently communicating in English, and Child protection)... along with professional review sessions and instructions on how to handle common situations in class. Thereby helping teaching assistants improve their professional skills and become more confident in their future careers.
Multiverse teaching at VUS
The system's strict assessments and requirements for teachers such as self-learning, self-reflection, peer-learning, etc., have become the motivation for teachers to strive.
The success of 183,118 VUS students achieving Cambridge and IELTS international certificates nationwide is also the success of the teaching staff at VUS.
By prioritizing teacher quality, VUS has built a quality English environment that has been recognized by NEAS as meeting international standards for 6 consecutive years. Currently, more than 2,700 teachers and teaching assistants are still making every effort in the creative English teaching universe through SmartKids (4-6 years old), SuperKids (6-11 years old), Young Leaders (11-15 years old), IELTS test preparation, iTALK adult communication English, and English Hub courses.
In particular, in 2022 and 2023, we will be honored to welcome nearly 200 more teachers to join the Creative Digital Technology, Math Thinking and General Exam Preparation programs - thereby expanding the colorful teaching universe at VUS.
