Typhoon Haikui has weakened since making landfall in Fujian province on September 5, but its circulation continues to wreak havoc in southern China.
According to Xinhua, in Bobai County, Guangxi Province, rescuers have been trying to bring people to safety since the evening of September 10 when water rose more than 2 meters, trapping residents in low-rise houses. In mountainous areas, landslides have destroyed roads and bridges.
At a weather station in Bobai, rainfall reached a record 511.2mm, more than a quarter of the area's annual rainfall. The densely populated city of Shenzhen also suffered its heaviest rainfall since records began in 1952. Hong Kong also suffered its worst rains in 140 years.
