A civilized capital, leaning on the mountain and looking at the river

From only Long Bien Bridge (built in 1898, put into use in 1903), Hanoi now has 8 more bridges across the Red River, including: Thang Long, Chuong Duong, Vinh Tuy, Thanh Tri, Nhat Tan, Vinh Thinh, Van Lang, Trung Ha; of which, 6 bridges are in the inner city.
According to Dr. Architect Dao Ngoc Nghiem, Vice President of the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association, each bridge across the Red River has a meaning, of which Long Bien Bridge has historical significance, built during the French period; Thang Long Bridge is associated with socialist friendship; Thanh Tri Bridge represents international integration; and Chuong Duong and Vinh Tuy Bridges have the meaning of internal strength with "the spirit of thrift"...

Previously, Hanoi mainly developed in the south of the Red River, leading to a huge disparity between regions. Since the planning, Hanoi has begun to develop strongly to the north of the Red River and built Chuong Duong Bridge connecting Hoan Kiem District with Gia Lam District. In 2003, Long Bien District was established, marking the first time that the central urban area of Hanoi "crossed the Red River". Therefore, Chuong Duong Bridge is associated with the symbol of Hanoi's internal development force. Nhat Tan Bridge is a new symbol of Hanoi when it develops to the west of the Red River, connecting Tay Ho District with Dong Anh District. According to the Transport Planning to 2030, vision 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, Hanoi will have 18 bridges across the Red River, seamlessly connecting economic and political centers; between local regions and satellite cities. Mr. Dao Ngoc Nghiem commented that building more bridges not only helps reduce traffic pressure and reduce population in the inner city but also contributes to the effective use of abundant land resources to restructure the economy, form and develop new residential areas. From there, it changes and promotes the value of land, typically after Nhat Tan Bridge was exploited and used, land prices in Dong Anh District increased very high; or when Thanh Tri Bridge was built, land prices in Thanh Tri District and Gia Lam District also increased. "If in the past, the construction of bridges was only for the purpose of traveling and trading between the two sides of the river, now the bridges also carry the responsibility of helping to balance development. Bridges are like giant scales, regulating and harmonizing between the two sides", Mr. Nghiem commented. Mr. Nghiem cited the Seine River (France) with 37 bridges. Notable among them are the 4 bridges Pont des Arts, Pont Neuf, Pont de Bir-Hakeim and Pont Alexandre III, creating a panoramic picture of the history and people of Paris. "And according to the plan, when Tu Lien Bridge is built, it will connect the two historical regions, located in the West Lake - Co Loa spatial axis, which is the heritage connection axis," said Mr. Nghiem. Regarding the determination of the Red River axis as one of the 5 driving axes of the Hanoi Capital Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, Dr. Nguyen Quang Anh, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), assessed that this is a strong reaffirmation of the central axis position of this river throughout history, the development of the capital in a balanced - harmonious, fast - strong - sustainable manner, reaching far and spreading to both banks. Thus, the model of "leaning on the mountain and looking at the river" of Ly Thai To has been correct for thousands of years and will certainly continue to be correct for tens, even hundreds of years to come. "Therefore, the goal of developing Hanoi into a "civilized - cultured - modern" city; a driving force to promote the development of the Red River Delta, the key economic region of the North and the whole country; a city that connects globally and is on par with the capitals of developed countries in the region will certainly become a complete and vivid reality," said Mr. Nguyen Quang Anh.
