Change traditional thinking and ways of doing things
Thong Nhat Xuan Lam Agricultural Cooperative (abbreviated as the Cooperative) originated from the merger of two cooperatives: Xuan Minh Cooperative and Xuan Duong Cooperative in 1962. In 2016, the Cooperative converted its operations under the 2012 Cooperative Law. Mr. Bui Van Chien was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Thong Nhat Xuan Lam Agricultural Cooperative.
Although the cooperative has been in operation for many years, its activities have been only moderate, and it was mainly established "for show". Since Mr. Bui Van Chien took over and converted it according to the Cooperative Law in 2012, the cooperative has been reorganized, and with the dynamism and enthusiasm of the new director, the cooperative has gradually stabilized and operated effectively.
In every position and job, Mr. Chien always puts the interests of the people first, with enthusiasm, dedication, responsibility, and handling each specific task. Especially, in the current conditions of climate change and strong development of science, technology, Mr. Chien understands and realizes that agriculture needs to change.
Mr. Bui Van Chien confided: "In the first years of establishment, the cooperative encountered many difficulties in capital, plus limited professional expertise. Along with that, the people's habits of fragmented, small-scale production, and each person doing their own thing, cannot be easily changed in a day or two. Therefore, the first thing I did, the cooperative's Board of Directors and I outlined groups of activities, prioritizing the application of scientific and technological advances into production.
We have researched and coordinated with the Agricultural Materials Company and businesses to support people in testing rice varieties, while promoting mechanization, linking production, and product consumption..."
Difficulties are gradually resolved over the years.
With a stable cultivation area of over 218 hectares, the commune cooperative has done well in supplying nearly 20 tons of rice seeds of all kinds each year. Of the 10 tested varieties, the cooperative has selected 4 sets of high-quality seeds, suitable for the soil and climate in the area for mass production, contributing to increasing rice productivity.
The cooperative supports 50% of the price of rice seeds for farmers, buys fertilizers on deferred payment from 250 - 300 tons of fertilizer with an outstanding debt of more than 300 million VND/crop. With the efforts and dedication of the head and the collective leadership of the cooperative, the image of fragmented fields with the buffalo in front and the plow behind in each planting season is no longer there. Instead, there are large fields that create favorable conditions for synchronous mechanization from plows, transplanters, combine harvesters in production, etc.
The cooperative has also built infrastructure and spacious warehouses to provide fertilizer services, rice seeds of all kinds, and plant protection drugs for producers. Nearly 700 cooperative members in the area is not a small number, but thanks to the cooperative's proactive provision of seeds, fertilizers, and plant protection drugs with guaranteed quality and reasonable prices, it has contributed to increasing rice output to an average of 50 - 60 quintals/ha, an increase of 5 - 7 quintals/ha compared to before; the rice output contracted for cooperative members each crop is from 500 - 700 tons.
Mr. Le Anh Son, a member of Thong Nhat Cooperative in Xuan Lam Commune, shared: "Since the Cooperative organized the fertilizer sales service, it has created favorable conditions for farmers in the production process. People do not spend as much time as before when having to buy fertilizer elsewhere, or buying floating fertilizer on the market that does not guarantee quality. This is also one of the factors that helps rice and crop production to be more effective than before."
Realizing that the land outside La Giang dike has favorable conditions to build a model of organic rice production combined with raising earthworms and clams, Mr. Bui Van Chien boldly built a project to renovate 10 hectares of rice fields to implement an organic rice production model combined with raising earthworms and clams in the Lam River area with a budget of 1.5 billion VND.
When the idea caught up with the province's policy in implementing the resolution on land consolidation conversion, the project was deployed and put into production from the spring crop of 2023.
After 2 years of production, the organic rice yield in the field of rươi reached an average of 54 quintals/ha, rươi reached 2.5 quintals/ha, and cay reached 3.5 quintals/ha. The production linkage aims to create quality rice, rươi, and cay products, towards building organic rice products that meet OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher and diversifying products from rươi and cay such as: frozen rươi, rươi sausage, rươi floss, cay sauce...
The achievements and results of the Cooperative today are due to the direct guidance of the Party Committee, the People's Committee of Xuan Lam Commune, the support of the Departments, branches, and the People's Committee of Nghi Xuan District. The solidarity, dynamism, creativity, thinking, and working of the Cooperative's Board of Directors, including the great contribution of the efforts, enthusiasm, and dedication of Mr. Bui Van Chien.
Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Bui Van Chien - Director of Thong Nhat Agricultural Cooperative, Xuan Lam commune, said: "To produce sustainable agriculture, it is necessary to create a chain linking both input and output. To do this, the cooperative plays the role of a bridge between businesses and producers. Products are consumed quickly, helping people have regular income from sales, people trust the role of the cooperative more."
Thong Nhat Agricultural Cooperative, Xuan Lam Commune has been awarded many Certificates of Merit by the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance, the People's Committee of Ha Tinh Province, the Provincial Cooperative Alliance and the People's Committee of Nghi Xuan District. In 2024, Thong Nhat Agricultural Cooperative, one of two units in Ha Tinh Province, was honored to receive the Cooperative Star Award from the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance in the top 100 cooperatives nationwide, to recognize and honor cooperatives and cooperative unions with outstanding achievements in production and business development activities.
