On the 29th of Tet, figs are sold everywhere in the market. Normally, this fruit is super cheap, only about 10,000 VND/kg. In the countryside, people even give them to each other because selling them is not worth much.
However, near Tet, figs are expensive items because many people choose to buy them to display on the Tet fruit tray with the wish that their family will have a prosperous year, as the name of this fruit suggests.
Accordingly, figs at the Tet market are sold in bunches, not by weight like other fruits. A bunch of figs costs between 50,000-70,000 VND, equivalent to 200,000-250,000 VND/kg. This price is 20-25 times higher than the normal selling price.
“However, figs are still very popular for Tet offerings,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Quy, a fruit seller at Dai Tu market (Hoang Mai, Hanoi). Her shop has been selling fig clusters for Tet offerings since December 25.
According to Ms. Quy, in addition to bananas and grapefruits, families often choose fruits such as coconuts, melons, figs, papayas, etc. on the fruit tray because their names carry the meaning of abundance and prosperity. She is selling figs for 60,000 VND per bunch, weighing nearly 300 grams, with full leaves.
“Yesterday and this morning, almost every customer who came to the store to buy fruit for the five-fruit tray chose figs. So, yesterday alone, I sold out 400 bunches. This morning, 3 boxes of fig bunches were sold out, and there were only 2 boxes left in the house before they were sold out,” she shared. Including the Tet holiday, the number of figs sold was estimated at about 1,500 bunches.
Collecting orders for figs from mid-December and delivering orders from the 27th to the 29th of the Lunar New Year, Ms. Tran Thi Hao, a fruit seller in Trung Hoa (Cau Giay, Hanoi), said that most customers buy 2-3 bunches, some only order 1 bunch. Houses with many electric panels or collecting orders for 5-20 figs are not many.
However, the number of customers ordering after nearly half a month of collecting orders has reached nearly 1,000 bunches.
“I choose the whole bunch of figs, not grafted, not tied with elastic bands. The bunch of figs with full leaves sells for 70,000 VND, the weight ranges from 2-3 taels/bunch,” she said. Currently, Ms. Hao has divided the last orders for shippers to deliver the figs to customers today. Now she is preparing to clean up the shop for Tet.
Talking to PV.VietNamNet , Mr. Nguyen Van Bao - a wholesaler of figs in Can Tho, said that figs are usually cheap fruits. They are mainly bought to be pickled and eaten with hot snails.
Every Tet holiday, figs become a hot commodity with sky-high prices because their name means prosperity. Mr. Bao has been wholesaling figs for 6-7 years. Previously, figs for Tet worship were only popular in the southern provinces. But since Tet 2023 until now, there have been many wholesale customers from the North, especially in Hanoi.
“There are wholesale customers who only buy 1-2 boxes, but there are also customers who buy 5-10 boxes,” he said. Since December 23, the amount of figs sold wholesale to customers in the northern provinces has increased sharply. Especially, in the days before Tet, the amount of figs he delivers to wholesale customers is up to 3,000-4,000 bunches per day.
Today, Mr. Bao has stopped wholesaling to customers in the North, only wholesaling to some dealers in the South. Because, the shipping time is only enough for the Southern wholesalers to receive the goods to sell on the morning of the 30th of Tet.
