Still holding a jug of ice water, the simple mother rushed out to pick up her child who had finished the combined exam, the high school graduation exam on the morning of June 28. She confided that she had only finished 3rd grade, and only hoped that her child would get into a public university and have a peaceful life.
Since the morning of June 28, the weather in Ho Chi Minh City has been extremely hot. After 7am, the gate of Ta Quang Buu High School in District 8 gradually became deserted, parents were busy going to the market, buying things or finding a shady place to wait for their children to take the high school graduation exam. Meanwhile, under a tree, a woman was still patiently waiting for her child. Her name is H., 59 years old, selling coffee and soft drinks in front of a residential area on Trinh Quang Nghi Street, District 8. Ms. H. was surprised when we said that today was Vietnamese Family Day. For her, there are only sunny and rainy days, days when her children are happy or sad, days when her children go to school or take exams, days when her children are healthy and sick, days when her sales are good or days when there are few customers.
"I have stopped selling recently to take my child to the exam. People have been calling me all the time. When I told them I was taking a break from selling, they said, 'Why don't you take your child to school, then come back to sell, and then pick him up?' But going back and forth like that takes time. Traffic jams, broken cars, and unpredictable rain and sun affect the child's exam time. So every day, my child and I go from morning to afternoon, my child takes the exam and I sit outside waiting for him from morning to afternoon," the simple woman said.
Mothers anxious about their children's exams
Ms. H. is from Bac Lieu. To make a living, she moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live and work. At first, she worked as a worker, but when she got married and became pregnant at the age of 41, she quit her job to sell coffee and soft drinks so she could take better care of her daughter. Her husband died early, before the Covid-19 pandemic, so the life of the mother and daughter was even more difficult in the boarding house. But the woman said that she only finished 3rd grade, no matter how difficult the economy was, she always prioritized her child's education. She wanted her child to finish high school, pass the entrance exam to a public university, and later have a stable job, a peaceful life, without having to work hard and endure the sun and rain like her mother.
"She is very good and studies hard. She has been an excellent student for 3 years in high school. This morning she took the natural science exam. She said she wants to study something that sounds like "ma ket" or "ma ket" (Marketing - PV). I just wish she could get into a public university so that I can have enough money to take care of her," she said.

The father waits for his son
Mother's hug drives away all my worries and tiredness
Yesterday afternoon, June 27, when her daughter finished her literature exam, Ms. H. and her daughter looked for a grilled pork noodle shop for lunch. They stopped at a coffee shop to rest and wait for the afternoon exam, but seeing that her daughter was too tired, the mother decided to find a hotel near Ta Quang Buu High School for her daughter to rest. The hotel charged 80,000 VND per hour. After her daughter entered the school to take the math exam, Ms. H. anxiously waited outside the gate. It was pouring rain, so she had to run to a coffee shop for temporary shelter. "I sell a bottle of soft drink for ten or fifteen thousand, but here they sell it for more than twenty thousand," she clicked her tongue.
Today, she decided to bring a mug of ice water to drink while waiting for her child. At 10:35, when the school bell rang, the parents all stood up and anxiously looked at the school gate. Mrs. H. also stood up quickly, so that when her daughter just walked out, she ran to hug her...
On Vietnamese Family Day, we also recorded the moments of fathers and mothers accompanying their children on the day of the high school graduation exam at other exam sites in Ho Chi Minh City - the exam is an important milestone in the lives of children. Whether it is sunny or rainy, parents still wait for their children, give them hugs, kisses, and encourage them. Family is always the most peaceful support for anyone, no matter what happens...
