GĐXH - Willing to leave her husband and ignore the doctor's advice, the brave mother helped her son overcome his illness and pass the entrance exam to the prestigious Harvard University.

On July 18, 1988, Zou Hongyan (25 years old) went into the operating room to give birth to her first son. However, an accident at birth left her son Ding Ding with cerebral palsy.

Doctors in Hubei province have suggested abandoning the baby, saying it would be pointless to save it as it would grow up to be disabled or have mental problems.

While Ding's father agreed and thought that his son would be a burden to the family, Zou was determined to save her son and later divorced her husband.

She named her child Ding Ding which means bird song, she hoped her child would be welcomed into this world.

In the days that followed, she was busy earning money to support and take care of her child. She worked full-time at a college in Wuhan and held two other part-time jobs.

Raising a child is hard enough, but taking care of Ding Ding is a thousand times harder. However, in 2011, he graduated from Peking University with a degree in environmental science. That same year, he pursued a second degree in international law.

In 2016, after working for two years, Ding was accepted to Harvard Law School at Harvard University. So how did this mother raise a boy with cerebral palsy to get into Harvard?

Ms. Zuo Hongyan works alone, teaches her child, and helps her child overcome cerebral palsy.

Eat on time with just the clock

Like many other children, when he was young, Ding liked sweets more than eating rice. When it was time to eat, Mrs. Zou often had to spend a lot of time coaxing him. Seeing this situation, she thought of a way.

One afternoon, it was 12 o'clock but Ding still didn't want to eat. Mrs. Zou pointed at the wall clock and said: "Ding, look, if you don't eat now, you can't eat until 6 o'clock." Not listening to his mother, he refused to eat and pushed the bowl and chopsticks away.

Having not had lunch, by around 4pm, Ding was ravenous and asked his grandmother for food. While his grandmother was getting food for him, Zou snatched it away and told his son , "It's agreed, dinner will be served at 6pm. You can't eat now."

Even though the child was so hungry that he cried, Mrs. Zou refused to give him food. Finally, at 6 p.m., Ding was so excited that Mrs. Zou brought him food and he started eating without his mother's help.

Be persistent with your child in exercising.

Usually, children with cerebral palsy will have 3 situations: One is motor nerve damage leading to paralysis, two is brain damage leading to dementia and finally, children can have both situations.

Before Ding was 1 year old, Zou Hongyan took him for an intelligence test. She was happy to learn that his intelligence was completely normal, but he was paralyzed on one side and had difficulty moving his left leg. Ding's hands were also very weak and he could not grasp anything.

To help her son develop his coordination and coordination skills, she asked him to tear paper and learn how to use chopsticks to eat rice. However, Ding could not use chopsticks no matter how much he practiced, and often cried and threw the chopsticks away. However, she was still patient and persistent with him, urging him to practice every day.

The rest of the time, she regularly takes her son to rehabilitation, regardless of rain or shine.

She learned how to massage her child's stiff muscles and played stimulating games with him.

She always insisted that her son would learn to overcome difficulties. For example, when Ding struggled to use chopsticks, many family members said it was natural, but Zou patiently taught him how to do it.

She told her son that if he didn't practice, every time he ate with others, he would have to explain to them why he couldn't hold chopsticks.

In addition, every day, she practiced writing with her son. Thanks to their efforts, by the end of the fourth grade, Ding was finally able to catch up to his normal writing speed, no longer being slow or left behind.

"My mother never helped me with my homework," Ding said. Instead, Zou Hongyan would buy her son a dictionary so he could look it up himself.

This is how Ding trained his self-study skills successfully. Moreover, she also taught him to practice logical thinking, to know how to ask questions when he had doubts. And absolutely not to hide things he did not understand.

Ms. Zuo Hongyan often plays crossword puzzles and brain-stimulating games with her children.

Practice memorizing by watching weather forecasts and news reports.

With cerebral palsy, Ding will not be able to remember as quickly and for as long as normal children. To train her child's memory, Mrs. Zou intentionally left and let her child watch the weather forecast alone.

"Ding, I'm washing the dishes. Can you help me check the weather forecast in Wuhan so I know what to wear tomorrow? " she recalled.

At first, Ding could only remember the highest temperature. Over time, he gradually learned to remember other weather data.

Not long after, she asked her son to watch the news broadcast and then tell her about it, saying that she needed to grade his papers.

On the first day of practice, Ding could only recite one news item. A week later, he was reciting two news items. After a few months, Ding was reciting the entire news item.

Sometimes when guests came to the house, he could chat with adults about political stories. With this habit, Mrs. Zou unexpectedly passed on to her son a passion for history and politics. That hobby followed him until later.

Teaching children to deal with failure

During his first year of junior high school, Ding had to take a military course.

But just a few days after the opening ceremony, while Ms. Zou Hongyan was on a business trip, she received a phone call from her son. He was crying and didn't want to go to school and wanted to quit.

The reason was that during the first military training session, Ding Ding could not stand still during the leg raise exercise and was criticized by the teacher. Ding Ding was ridiculed by her friends and was called a person with cerebral palsy.

After hearing this, Zou Hongyan took the night train back. She went to her son's school and stepped onto the podium during recess. She told Ding's classmates that they were all lucky to be born healthy and normal. When they grew up, they could freely choose their jobs, but Ding was not so lucky. Only by studying hard could he have a good future.

But his friends bullied Ding, making him not want to go to school, which will affect his future.

When Ms. Zou Hongyan spoke, the whole class listened in silence. After this story, Ding was no longer bullied. And in the final exam, he got high scores, ranking first in the class.

Ms. Zuo Hongyan is happy that her son overcame his illness and became a successful student.

Teach children to live with purpose

Zou Hongyan was also an ambitious person, always wanting her son to study in famous schools. This made Ding dissatisfied. He thought that studying everywhere was the same and had a conflict with his mother. Later, she calmly resolved the problem.

She took her son to an apartment building to look at rooms. Entering the first room on the first floor, she asked him if he could see the city center through the window. Ding replied that he couldn't.

On the 6th floor, she continued to ask her son that question and Ding answered yes. Then the mother and son went up to the 20th floor, at this time the view was wide open and very beautiful.

And Ms. Zou Hongyan used the story to share that choosing rooms is like life. People should strive for big goals to be able to develop.

Under her mother's strict and loving education, Ding Ding grew up and passed the entrance exam to Peking University with high scores.

Moreover, after many years of rehabilitation training, his body is like a normal person.

Ding also studied for a Master of Laws at Peking University. He received several national scholarships. After graduating, Ding worked in the legal department of a famous Internet company.

Even though he was working, he still studied and practiced hard. A year later, he was excellently accepted to study for a Master's degree at Harvard University.

After graduating, Ding decided to take the bar exam in the United States and was wholeheartedly supported by his mother. Ms. Zou Hongyan also followed her son to the United States to take care of him and encourage him to try his best.

It can be said that Ms. Zou Hongyan is a wonderful mother. She has overcome all challenges to accompany and educate her children to become good people. Currently, Ms. Zou Hongyan is an Associate Professor at Wuhan Vocational College, achieving excellent results for many years.
