Banh chung and banh tet are two indispensable cakes during the Lunar New Year. Every year, families prepare to make cakes or buy two or three pairs to worship their ancestors and then gather together to enjoy them.
Wanting her children to feel the Tet atmosphere, Ms. Bui Thi Hoa (32 years old, self-employed, living in Hanoi ) cooked her own Chung cake and Tet cake using a pressure cooker at home. Ms. Hoa calls the cakes she makes "city cakes".
As for the ingredients, Ms. Hoa prepared 2.5kg of sticky rice, purple sticky rice, 500g of green beans, gac fruit, pork and spices such as onions, pepper, and salt.
Ms. Hoa soaked sticky rice and mung beans for 8 hours, then washed them, drained them, and mixed them with a little salt. Ms. Hoa made two types of cakes (banh chung and banh tet) with many different colors.
"After wrapping the cake, I put it in the pressure cooker, turned on the "Cook Beans" function twice (total time 80 minutes) and then left the cake in the pot overnight, then took it out the next morning," Ms. Hoa shared about the time it took to boil the cake.
Ms. Hoa said that her children were very happy to participate in wrapping the cakes. They kept asking about the types of cakes, ingredients, and how to wrap a complete cake.
Not only making traditional banh chung and banh tet, Ms. Hoa also dyes sticky rice with gac fruit, purple rice leaves, turmeric, and galangal leaves to create many beautiful colors for the cakes.
With only 50,000 - 100,000 VND, Ms. Hoa can buy a cake at a shop. However, she still wants to make delicious cakes herself to worship Ong Cong, Ong Tao or display on the altar during Tet.
"The preparation doesn't take too long, only about 45 minutes, but in return, the whole family gets to gather together and feel the atmosphere of the Lunar New Year 2024 approaching very soon," said Ms. Hoa.
