2024 marks a year of Huawei's return to the Vietnamese technology market as the company continuously introduces new products to best meet the increasingly diverse needs of users. At the end of the year, Huawei launched the 12.2-inch MatePad Pro, a tablet described as a miniature PC thanks to its powerful performance, compact design, and flexible work support capabilities. Before arriving in Vietnam, the product received positive feedback from global users.
Compact design
The MatePad Pro is Huawei's most premium tablet globally.
Introduced as one of the top thinnest and lightest tablets today, the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 inch weighs only 508 grams and is 5.5 mm thin. With this appearance, the device is highly portable, suitable for customers who are often on the go. With a 12.2 inch screen, this device has a total area and weight smaller than the MacBook Air, so it can easily fit into handbags without taking up much space.
To streamline the design, the manufacturer equipped this tablet with a physical keyboard and a smart pen compartment inside. When the device is folded with the case, the pen is still neatly hidden without changing the overall thickness of the device, while still ensuring safety, avoiding the case of dropping, losing or colliding the pen with other objects, avoiding the risk of damage.
This also helps users quickly switch between the machine's functions when all necessary items are included with the machine, without having to waste time searching for items or preparing additional accessory bags to store them.
Huawei MatePad Pro can be used in 3 different modes: tablet, personal computer (laptop) and drawing board. In tablet mode for entertainment such as accessing the Internet to watch movies, YouTube, read books, newspapers... users can separate the device from the case to hold it in hand, or place it on the table, adjust the tilt angle. In computer mode, the physical keyboard has a sensitive touchpad and a large area, making it easier to control and type.
The design of hiding the pen inside and converting the screen tilt with the support of the included case brings a good user experience in both content creation and entertainment tasks.
The actual typing experience on the included keyboard feels stable, soft keys, just enough key travel, does not cause fatigue or pain in the fingertips during long periods of use. With a morning of working on text editing on this keyboard, the feeling is still comfortable, without tiring the wrist. For those who are used to using scissor, butterfly or low-profile keyboards, it will not be difficult to get used to, however, users who often type mechanically will feel a bit lost at first.
With drawing board mode, users only need to lower the tilt of the device when mounted on the case to get a design suitable for drawing or taking notes using a pen. The tilt of the screen compared to the table surface is now moderate, with the necessary comfort to keep the wrist in a stable position.
Configuration and hardware
Huawei MatePad Pro uses a 12.2-inch Tandem OLED FullView screen with a resolution of 2,800 x 1,840 pixels, a screen/front display ratio of up to 92%, the highest currently. The 3:2 aspect ratio, compatible with PC interfaces and popular applications, provides a spacious working space. The screen integrates a nano optical layer that reduces 99% of light interference, limits reflection, making it suitable for use even in outdoor conditions, direct sunlight.
Huawei also uses a PaperMatte faux-frosted glass surface to make the pen feel more realistic, like drawing on a paper surface. These features are available on the standard version of the device, unlike the iPad, where similar technologies are only available on the highest-end model with over 1TB of internal memory.
The M-Pencil can be fixed on the body and conveniently charges wirelessly.
The default RAM is 12 GB, with 2 storage options of 256 GB and 512 GB. The main camera includes 2 sensors: 13 MP (f/1.8 aperture, autofocus) and 8 MP (wide angle, f/2.2 aperture). The front camera is a smart sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
The device is equipped with a 10,100 mAh battery, providing comfortable usage time. In practice, it can be used for work, watching movies on Netflix continuously for a whole morning and extending into the afternoon. The device supports Huawei SuperCharge fast charging technology with a maximum capacity of 100 W, allowing the device to be fully charged in about 55 minutes. This helps to charge quickly and users can continue using it without interrupting their work.
NearLink technology helps peripherals automatically connect to the computer without the need for setup.
In addition to the keyboard peripheral hardware mentioned above, the device also comes with an M-Pencil stylus. These devices all integrate NearLink technology to connect directly when in close proximity without any installation. The M-Pencil "understands" 10,000 levels of pressure sensing, extremely low latency makes the feeling of writing on the screen more realistic.
PC-like performance and experience
The design is not the point that makes MatePad Pro different from the market when currently some tablet manufacturers also offer similar options, although not exactly the same. The most notable highlight of this device compared to the general level is the performance as well as the ability to handle work that is somewhat different from tablets, even with Apple iPad - the tablet is considered the model closest to a laptop.
Users can use the software with full PC interface and features on the MatePad Pro tablet.
Specifically, current tablets when running applications are a mobile version, shortened compared to the version for PC/desktop/laptop. Therefore, using popular office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint will be more difficult because the mobile interface is made differently, hiding or removing some features to suit the configuration as well as the mobility of this mobile device line. However, the system on the 12.2-inch MatePad Pro recognizes this as a "PC" and integrates the full version of the WPS Office application, thanks to which users will have an experience no different from a computer when doing office tasks.
In addition to the Office suite that is different from other tablets on the market, the product from Huawei is designed to provide a creative space for users through many auxiliary and exclusive software, for example GoPaint and a professional brush toolkit. In terms of software, one of the issues that many people are concerned about is the compatibility of Huawei's platform with Google services, which now has a solution to install an additional supporting application.
The machine feels quite comfortable to work with, has a sturdy design, and even when placed on the lap and typing, the keys do not vibrate like some tablet keyboards on the market.
Through actual use, the system still receives full push notifications for all applications, users can use many services such as Gmail, Google Search, Drive, YouTube..., Facebook social network on this device without any difference compared to other tablets sold in Vietnam. However, it must be admitted that this is a point that needs to be overcome, because installing additional support applications, although simple, still requires users to perform an additional operation, before being able to use the device according to familiar needs. Once this problem is overcome, the usage process will encounter no problems.
Overall, with a compact design, high performance and an experience that has the most similarities to a PC compared to the tablet segment, the 12.2-inch MatePad Pro is a choice that can be considered for office users or content creators (not inclined to video editing as the main job) who are looking for a tablet but still want to meet the work requirements like a laptop for easy portability.
According to the manufacturer's announcement, the device will include a keyboard and pen in the box, so users do not need to purchase additional equipment.
