The affection of the audience, colleagues and the sublime emotions on stage are what Mai Tien Dung appreciates when coming to the program.
Although the time participating in reality TV shows is long and affects other work schedules, Mai Tien Dung still diligently appears in many different programs. A large part of the male singer's motivation comes from the audience - people who are always impatient when their idols rarely appear on TV, are slow to release new products...
What do you think about the name "Prince of music" from the show? Our song that the audience has for you?
I think partly because my recent songs are emotional ballads, creating a narrative space for the listener. So when looking for a name for me as the youngest OG (OG: Old Generation- Fire-Passing Generation), the program chose this name, meaning a young person who sings lyrical music.
However, "prince" also means rich!
(Laughs loudly) Everyone says I'm rich, but I don't think I have anything. I'm only rich in emotions! After so many years, I see that my accumulated assets are not much. Because I'm also passionate about the profession, I save up everything to reinvest. The savings are actually not worth mentioning! When I returned to the country to develop my career, I went all in, using the money I saved from my first days of singing to invest, but at that time it was not successful. I had no reputation, and the money was gone. So I had to start over.
"Everyone is surprised to see that in real life I am a bit "crazy", happy, and easy-going, but I seem sad and sentimental when singing ballads," Mai Tien Dung humorously describes himself.
What did you do to get yourself back up after those difficulties?
I tried to sing to make a living. Then I participated in reality TV shows, got known by the press, so I had the opportunity to get closer to the audience. From then on, everything was better. My biggest concern was how to make a quality product with limited money so that the audience would accept it. After all, I have been in the profession for a long time, so I don't want to be superficial. That's why I can't release products continuously, but have to save up slowly before doing it.
After leaving Our song , what do you think you have gained, and what regrets do you have?
This is a fun and meaningful playground. What I remember most is when I paused the game. The following week, when everyone was preparing a new show and I was at home, I really missed the moments on set. The rare energy in this program is something I really appreciate.
I was lucky to have the opportunity to sing with my senior Thanh Lam and young people like Orange, LyLy... They gave me many opportunities to explore myself, to be more sensitive to the market, to be more active, to keep up with the flow of modern music.
Why in EP Totally heartbroken , you invested a lot when making 4 MVs at the same time with different styles?
The songs I choose to perform are often narrative, like telling a story to others. These elements make it easy for me to sing "nhac suy" and touch the hearts of the audience. Mai Tien Dung |
The EP has 3 ballads and 1 upbeat song. I think I have two opposing extremes: either very happy or very sad. My choice of music also clearly shows this. I want to experiment and hope to receive support for the new EP to have more motivation and new inspiration for upcoming projects in 2025.
I think the song "Love like the last day of love" released 7 years ago is about real emotions, memories, and experiences in life when my career was going downhill and my love was not flourishing. At that time, I chose to sing it because I wanted to comfort my own emotions first.
Although you have returned to Vietnam to participate in many music programs and have many friends in the art world at home and abroad, your image with Vietnamese audiences is still limited. Can you explain?
I appear to be cheerful and cheerful, but I am actually an introvert. If I am not performing, I rarely go out, just stay at home or occasionally go to my friends' houses. I think this is a barrier that I am still learning to change. I am learning to adapt and be more open in everything.
How do you see yourself changing after a period of working in the arts?
I often listen to old songs to learn from them. After a while, I look back and see that I sang very immaturely because I lacked life experience. So I still practice every day.
Maybe because I put too much emotion into the lyrics and notes. So when I hear the sounds and words arranged in the right mood, I get emotional and a little tearful. I want to change a habit that when I get too absorbed in singing, I easily choke up and have difficulty pronouncing well.
