Theory and criticism of Ho Chi Minh City's literature and arts towards the 50th anniversary of National Reunification Day

On January 21, the Propaganda Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee held a conference to review the Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts (VHNT) for the last 6 months of 2024 and orientations for tasks in 2025.

The conference was chaired by comrades: Phan Nguyen Nhu Khue, Head of the City Party Committee's Propaganda Department, Chairman of the Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts; Nguyen Tho Truyen, Deputy Head of the City Party Committee's Propaganda Department, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Council. Comrade Pham Phuong Thao, former Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, former Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council and members of the Council also attended.

According to the report of the Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts, in 2024, the city will organize many activities to celebrate important holidays of the country and the city. The field of culture and arts has many outstanding events, especially the increasingly strong mark of the cultural industry with many exciting activities such as the Ho Do International Music Festival, Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HIFF), Ho Chi Minh City River Festival... making a strong impression on the people and tourists.

Comrade Nguyen Tho Truyen reported on the activities of the Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts in 2024.

Along with that is the preparation for organizing the scientific workshop "National value system, cultural value system, family value system and Vietnamese human standards in the new period associated with the reality of the Southeast region"; summarizing 10 years of implementing Resolution No. 33-NQ/TW dated June 9, 2014 of the 11th Party Central Committee on "building and developing Vietnamese culture and people to meet the requirements of sustainable national development"; implementing action program No. 44-CTrHD/TU dated August 19, 2023 on "Building Ho Chi Minh cultural space".

In addition, implementing the direction of the Central Council of Literature and Arts on coordinating the organization of the National Scientific Conference "Literature and art with the theme of armed forces and revolutionary war", delegates highly appreciated the significance of the topic, practically contributing to the cause of building and developing literature and arts, promoting the strength of literature and arts in the cause of defending the Fatherland in the new situation.

In addition, with the aim of improving the activities of the City Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts; orienting and refuting wrong views on cultural and artistic activities in Ho Chi Minh City to artists and people of all walks of life, the Council has received, edited and published the publication Research on Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts in Ho Chi Minh City (Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House). The book is a collection of articles and works on theoretical research and criticism of literature and arts, considered a reference document for researchers and cultural managers...

People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, is interested in the story of promoting literary and artistic works.

Also in 2024, the Council organized the 2024 Literature and Arts Training Conference; the Seminar "Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts in Ho Chi Minh City 50 Years After the Reunification of the Country: Current Situation and Solutions" to foster knowledge of literature and arts, raise political and ideological awareness in the field of literature and arts for the city's literature and arts associations, relevant departments, branches and sectors; editors of some newspapers and radio stations; lecturers of universities and colleges with majors in culture and literature and arts in the city. Thereby contributing to advising and orienting aesthetic tastes and ideology in the city's literature and arts activities and refuting wrong views in the field of literature and arts.

People's Artist Ta Minh Tam proposed to pay more attention and create more favorable conditions for young artists.

Speaking at the conference, comrade Phan Nguyen Nhu Khue said that over the past year, the City Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts has been highly appreciated by the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts. According to him, 2025 is a year with many events and activities related to each member organization, including the Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts. In addition to the festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, there are many other activities and events, and the associations need to be creative in creating more activities to make them more colorful.

Writer Bui Anh Tan, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, Editor-in-Chief of Ho Chi Minh City Literature and Arts Magazine, spoke at the conference.

According to comrade Phan Nguyen Nhu Khue, one of the unfinished tasks in 2024 is to make a documentary film on 100 years of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City reformed opera. Head of the Propaganda Department of the City Party Committee Phan Nguyen Nhu Khue said that this is an important and necessary task because over time, many senior artists will pass away. Meanwhile, the next generation not only needs to read books but also needs images and films to be gathered and passed down. According to him, this task must be restarted after the Lunar New Year with specific activities.

Deputy Head of the Propaganda Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Tho Truyen said that the Council will record the proposals of the delegates and have written reports related to the fields, reflect to the units, mainly the City Party Committee, and will have instructions for the relevant agencies on the above proposals.

Some key tasks and activities in 2025:

1. Advise the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee to request the policy of coordinating with Nguyen Dinh Chieu Film Studio to implement the Program "Theory and criticism of literature and art in Ho Chi Minh City".

2. Consulting on the Plan to summarize 15 years of establishing the Ho Chi Minh City Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts.

3. Organize training and foster theoretical and critical work on the topic "The current role of literature and art in creation, research, scholarship, and promotion of works".

4. Develop a plan to publish books on Theory and criticism of literature and art in Ho Chi Minh City 50 years after the country's reunification: Current situation and solutions .

5. Maintain good implementation of the working regime and report according to the operating regulations of the City Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts, improve the quality and effectiveness of the sub-committees' operations.

6. Promote the role of Council members in participating in writing articles on literature and art orientation and articles refuting wrong views in the field of literature and art. Strengthen monitoring of creative and promotional activities of Associations as well as other cultural activities in the city to take preventive measures.

7. Organize a meeting of the Council of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Art in 2025, setting out the content, direction and tasks for 2026.
