The Vietnamese team had a difficult match against Hong Kong (China). Coach Troussier and his team only won with a minimum score of 1-0 thanks to Que Ngoc Hai's penalty goal. However, most fans were not satisfied with the start of the Vietnamese team under Coach Troussier.
Controversial penalty
The Vietnamese team only had one most dangerous opportunity in the first 45 minutes, which was a penalty kick that led to Que Ngoc Hai's goal. In the 31st minute, Hong Kong (China) center-back Helio Goncalves collided with Nguyen Quang Hai. Referee Bin Tuan Mohd Yassin immediately awarded a penalty to the Vietnamese team, and this decision was met with protests from Hong Kong (China) players.
After the match, coach Jorn Andersen said this was an incorrect decision. Looking back at this play, Helio's impact on Quang Hai was unclear. The away team's central defender did not push or use his shoulder to push. Quang Hai cleverly fell right after Helio made an impact on him, but whether or not there was a penalty still depends on judgment and there will be conflicting opinions.
However, the penalty had a significant impact on the outcome of the match. In the 30 minutes before the penalty, the Hong Kong (China) team had 3 dangerous opportunities, in which striker Matthew Orr once hit the crossbar of Van Lam.
Loose defense
The only position that brings peace of mind to the defense of the Vietnamese team is Que Ngoc Hai. The central defender born in 1993 rarely loses in one-on-one battles and still ensures the ability to deploy the ball impressively from the home field. Meanwhile, Thanh Binh and especially Duy Manh make fans worried. They let the opposing strikers pass quite easily and approach the goal.
Goalkeeper Van Lam had a match with many good saves. But his good ability to play with his feet was revealed when asked to participate in the development of the ball.
Coach Troussier made some personnel adjustments when Phan Tuan Tai was brought on in the second half. Viettel FC's players played well, showing their passing ability. However, it is difficult to judge that Tuan Tai showed good enough defensive quality. The Hong Kong (China) strikers were in a lot of physical decline and could no longer put pressure on the defenders of the Vietnamese team.
The attack lacks pieces.
The Vietnamese team controlled the ball well against the Hong Kong (China) team. The problem for coach Troussier and his team is the quality of play in the final third of the field, close to the opponent's 16m50 area. In the first half, Quang Hai played as a right forward, he played creatively but not effectively, partly due to his poor form.
But Van Tung and Tuan Hai clearly did not play up to expectations. They were enthusiastic and strong but did not put pressure on the opposing defenders. Behind this duo, the midfielders could hardly make good enough passes to tear apart the opposing defense.
The Vietnamese team had no choice but to pass the ball out wide to Doan Van Hau and Ho Tan Tai. The crosses from this duo were rarely effective because the strikers inside did not occupy important positions. In short, the Vietnamese team did not have a good enough strategy, the connection was not high, but it was understandable. Coach Troussier was in the process of rebuilding the team according to a new philosophy and he needed time to help the players understand his ideas.
