Two films that caused a fever at the box office, "Dat Rung Phuong Nam" and "Nha Ba Nu" with many controversies, were not mentioned even once at the 2023 Vietnam Film Festival awards ceremony.
Dat Rung Phuong Nam was released in theaters on October 13 with high revenue but also got into controversy right after its release. The film was criticized for distorting history when it emphasized the position of Thien Dia Hoi and Nghia Hoa Doan. Therefore, the leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested a re-evaluation of the film, and a meeting between the Department of Cinema and the representative of the producer Dat Rung Phuong Nam took place on the afternoon of October 14 to review the issues that the audience had reported.
The producer then proactively proposed to change the dialogue in the film, changing "Boxer's Righteousness" to "Southern Boxer's Righteousness" and "Heaven and Earth Society" to "Righteousness Society" to avoid associations with "Heaven and Earth Society" and "Boxer's Righteousness" from the Qing Dynasty of China.

The film version of Dat Rung Phuong Nam is directed by Nguyen Quang Dung. The film is based on the novel of the same name by writer Doan Gioi with an investment of up to 40 billion VND. As soon as Dat Rung Phuong Nam was selected as one of 16 films competing in the Feature Film category at the 2023 Vietnam Film Festival in Da Lat, it created public opinion.
At the press conference of the 2023 Vietnam Film Festival in Hanoi on October 30, when asked about whether the recent noise affected the results of the Southern Forest Land? Director of the Department of Cinema Vi Kien Thanh said that everything must be based on the results of the judging panels, the jury will decide the award, and public opinion will be considered in the award of the audience voting for their favorite film. The awards and results at the Film Festival are only based on the assessment of the jury.

People's Artist Dao Ba Son told VietNamNet : "There is no discrimination with the film. When the Organizing Committee screened Dat Rung Phuong Nam for the judges, there was no pressure at all. The judges also viewed Dat Rung Phuong Nam like all other films. It's just that when dissecting each award, it depends on the quality of each issue and each element in the film."
People's Artist Dao Ba Son said that he personally appreciates Dat Rung Phuong Nam because of the investment from the setting, staging, filming to all aspects to create a work, the production crew did very well.
"They have prepared carefully and it is clear that the jury recognizes their efforts and aspirations. However, there are many other films. Recently, the jury asked for more awards but was not allowed because the organizers said the award system is like that. This year, we are also very sorry because there are many good films," said People's Artist Dao Ba Son.

Sharing the same fate as Dat rung phuong nam is Nha ba Nu - another film by Tran Thanh. Nha ba Nu was released in January 2023 and quickly became the highest-grossing film in box office history with 475 billion VND. The work was also named at the first Asian Film Festival - Da Nang held in May 2023. However, Nha ba Nu also completely failed at the 2023 Vietnam Film Festival. Is this film just for the market?
People's Artist Dao Ba Son told VietNamNet: " The House of Mrs. Nu is also a very good film. The humanity of the film is profound. We highly appreciate The House of Mrs. Nu. However, after considering that Con Nhót mot chong was released later but exploited the poor class living in small alleys, in them shines kindness, altruism and good treatment of each other, so the jury chose to award it."
