The year 2003 is remembered as the milestone when the most outstanding filmmakers of Korean cinema came to light. Within just one year, Oasis by director Lee Chang Dong, Memories Of Murders by Bong Joon Ho, Sympathy For Mr Vengeance by Park Chan Wook were released and all were ranked as classics.
And also in 2003, when Asian horror films were the playground of the Japanese, suddenly a representative from Korea named A tale of two sisters appeared, bringing a new, profound, artistic breeze, helping horror films escape the rut of shallowness and only knowing how to scare.
A Tale of Two Sisters is one of the monuments of Asian horror films.
Directed by Kim Jee-Woon, A Tale of Two Sisters is one of the most aesthetically pleasing horror films ever made. The film has a multi-layered script, expressed through a slow cinematic language, timed to its climax, and a valuable scare, harmoniously combined with elements of color, setting, music, and metaphorical details.
All the elements combine to create a work full of aesthetics, bringing to the viewer a fear with many layers, from anxiety, panic to torment, obsession. Those who are immune to fear said that the tragic story of two sisters in A Tale of Two Sisters left them with a sad and lingering sadness.
A Tale of Two Sisters can be considered a “once in a century” work of art by director Kim Jee-Woon and Korean cinema. Until now, 21 years after its release, no one has been able to imitate or create a film that approaches the stature of this classic work.
The father of A Tale of Two Sisters - director Kim Jee-Woon came to Vietnam for the first time at the invitation of the 2024 Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival.
A large number of Vietnamese audiences, despite the scorching sun, came to the Ho Chi Minh City Theater at exactly 2:00 p.m. on April 9 to enjoy the film. This shows that the appeal of A Tale of Two Sisters is still intact.
After the screening was a Q&A session, director Kim Jee-Woon, now nearly 60 years old, still maintaining his form and enthusiastic energy, had a lively conversation with the audience.
The Korean director said he doesn’t have the courage to review his own films. “I’m afraid of seeing things I could have done better, and I’m worried that if I review my work, I’ll easily sink into regret. That’s why I rarely review my own work,” he shared.
Regarding the process of creating A Tale of Two Sisters , director Kim said he wanted to explore aesthetics, searching for a fresh beauty that no one had ever seen before. Based on a sad story and from images that evoke sadness encountered in everyday life, he created an emotional thread throughout the film. According to him, the language of horror films is the most intuitive and effective way to express the inner thoughts of the main character of the story.
After the screening, director Kim had an exciting conversation with the Vietnamese audience.
Actor Lien Binh Phat and director Leon Quang Le (film Song Lang) attended the film screening.
He also encourages young people who are pursuing cinema to put all their heart into their passion, find an interesting story and think of every way to make it into a film. The idea of making A Tale of Two Sisters came to Kim Jee-Woon in college, after reading a novel. The desire to make a beautiful and sad horror film became the main motivation for him to put all his heart and soul into it, working hard for many years to make it a reality.
