The 2025-2026 public high school entrance exam in Hanoi has many new points. Candidates need to have a firm grasp of this year's admission regulations so as not to miss the opportunity to be admitted to public grade 10.

Be careful in reviewing

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training (DET) has announced that the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year is Foreign Language. Thus, to take the entrance exam for non-specialized public high schools, candidates will take three exams in the following subjects: Literature, Math, and Foreign Language.

In particular, the Math and Literature exams are in essay format; the Foreign Language exam is in objective multiple choice format. For the Foreign Language exam, candidates register for one of the following languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Korean.

The 2025-2026 school year is the first year that the 10th grade entrance exam will be conducted according to the 2018 General Education Program. To help students and teachers have specific directions to organize effective teaching, learning, and review, and prepare well for the 10th grade entrance exam in the 2025-2026 school year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has announced the format structure and sample questions for the exam subjects.

According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, questions at the recognition level will account for 20%, and questions at the comprehension and application levels will each account for 40%. The Department recommends that schools research and apply the exam structure in teaching and reviewing so that students can get used to new types of multiple-choice tests such as true/false and short answers.

With the exam format structure this year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhiep - Principal of Chu Van An High School for the Gifted (Tay Ho District) noted that students must know how to calculate and invest in reviewing to promote their strengths and increase their abilities in weak subjects.

In each test, students must know where they went wrong and find out why they made the mistake. They can proactively ask their friends and teachers so they won't make the same mistake.

Ms. Nhiep also noted that students need to know the characteristics of each subject to get high scores. As with Math, students must not skip solving steps. Because even if they get the correct result, if they miss a step, they can lose points.

Note on choice of wishes

Students applying for grade 10 this year should note that each candidate can register to apply to a maximum of 3 public high schools, ranked in order of preferences 1, 2 and 3.

Mr. Nghiem Van Binh, Deputy Head of the Examination Management and Education Quality Assessment Department (Hanoi Department of Education and Training) noted that candidates choosing their first and second choices must be in the prescribed admission areas; their third choice can be in any admission area. Students who are admitted to their first choice will not be considered for their second and third choices.

The entrance exam for grade 10 of public high schools in Hanoi for the 2025-2026 school year will take place on June 7 and 8, 2025. Candidates for grade 10 specialized subjects will take the specialized subject exam on June 9, after completing the entrance exams for grade 10 of public high schools.

Candidates can register for admission to specialized 10th grade classes of 2 out of 4 specialized high schools: Hanoi - Amsterdam, Nguyen Hue, Chu Van An and Son Tay.

This school year, Hanoi has about 127,000 junior high school graduates, down nearly 6,000 compared to last year. The total quota for public schools is 79,000.

Thus, the rate of students passing public high schools is more than 62%.

Regarding the calculation of the 10th grade benchmark scores for this year's 10th grade entrance exam, implementing Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT promulgating regulations on junior high school and high school admissions, Hanoi will not multiply the coefficient 2 for the Math and Literature exams as in previous years.

Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that Hanoi students who won prizes in the city's excellent student competition in cultural subjects for grade 9 middle school will not receive extra points in the admission to grade 10 public high schools this school year.
