Water hyacinth, a harmful wild alien plant, now people have money.
In the rural areas of Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province, people have long known how to utilize water hyacinth growing on canals as raw materials to weave products such as handbags, carpets, etc. that are very environmentally friendly.
Currently, the craft of weaving products from water hyacinth is helping people have more jobs at home during the off-season, increasing family income and stabilizing life.
Mr. Ma Thanh Son, My Tho hamlet, My Quoi commune, Nga Nam town said that his family has been involved in the water hyacinth weaving profession for about 5 years now.
"Farmers in this area only grow two rice crops per year, so they have a lot of free time. That's why the locality developed a water hyacinth weaving model to create jobs for rural workers," said Mr. Son.
According to Mr. Son, in addition to cultivating the family's 2 hectares of rice land, his family has 3 people involved in weaving water hyacinth, earning an additional income of 70-80 million VND each year.
"My family knits 240-300 frames a week. After deducting the cost of materials, the cooperative pays us over 8 million VND per month," Mr. Son added.

According to farmers in Nga Nam town, this is a very suitable job for local idle laborers. Families who are willing to do this will have a more stable life than those who leave their hometowns to work in the cities.
The agricultural sector of Nga Nam town said that the locality's main economic activity is agricultural production. In recent years, along with investment in infrastructure, irrigation, and gradually completed transportation, it has met the needs of people's cultivation and livestock farming.
However, for households with few means of production and poor households, having an additional job to do at home in their spare time is extremely necessary. The model of weaving water hyacinth not only solves the problem of employment for people, but also creates additional income and improves the quality of life.
