Scientists have found that eating kiwis can improve a person's mood in just four days.
The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, was conducted by Dr Tamlin Conner, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Otago. According to the research team, kiwis are rich in vitamin C, which has the effect of increasing mood, happiness and vitality, thereby improving mental health.
To test the effects of kiwifruit, the team conducted an experiment on 155 adults with vitamin C deficiency, dividing them into three groups for eight weeks. The first group took a placebo, the second group took a 250 mg vitamin C supplement, and the third group ate two kiwifruit. They were then asked to report on their vitality, mood, sleep quality, and physical activity.
The researchers found that both the vitamin C and kiwi groups experienced improved mood. However, those who ate kiwis had increased cognitive function. What’s more, their mood improved after just four days, with the effect peaking around days 14 to 16.

Study co-author Dr Ben Fletcher said the participants had relatively good mental health at the start, so the improvement was not as dramatic. However, the study still showed the benefits of kiwi and vitamin C.
Scientists believe that the fruit's ability to improve mood is also due to vitamin C. The kiwis that the volunteers used have yellow flesh and contain three times more vitamin C than oranges and strawberries.
According to Dr. Fletcher, research shows that the foods we consume on a daily basis have a relatively rapid impact on how we feel.
“We recommend that people take a holistic approach to nutrition and health, incorporating a variety of nutrient-rich foods into their diet,” says Fletcher.
