Heavy rains lasting for many days have caused landslides on the banks of the Ngan Mo River through Cam Due Commune (Cam Xuyen - Ha Tinh), threatening people's homes and property.
Video: Some serious landslides on the banks of Ngan Mo River "threaten" people's houses.
After heavy rain from late night to early morning on October 25, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (Phuong Tru village, Cam Due commune) was shocked to discover that a solid fence over 30m long, a water treatment manhole and a livestock farm behind the house had been swept away by the flood of the Ngan Mo river.
The landslide site on October 10, 2023 of Ms. Nguyen Thi Van's family (Phuong Tru village) was supported by the local government with a stone gabion embankment; Ms. Van also built a wall and paved it with cement, but now it continues to erode.
Two weeks earlier, part of the fence had been washed away and the local government provided manpower and 100 blocks of stone to reinforce the landslide. Ms. Van’s family also spent an additional 30 million VND to build solid bricks and pave with concrete, but still could not stop the Ngan Mo stream.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van worriedly said: “This year, although Ke Go Lake has not released floodwaters, my house has been eroded twice in a row. This time, the erosion was about 30m long, about 2m wide; about 8m away from the house. The point that was reinforced 2 weeks ago continued to be “swallowed” by the Ngan Mo River, making us very scared.”
The land was dug deep under the foundation of Mr. Le Duc Thang's family.
Next to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Van's family, the land and trees in the backyard of Mr. Le Duc Thang's family (Phuong Tru village, Cam Due commune) were also washed away in the recent heavy rains. Mr. Thang had to cut down large trees near the riverbank to prevent the flood from washing away more land in the backyard.
According to preliminary statistics, up to now, the entire Phuong Tru village, Cam Due commune has had 4 major landslides, directly threatening the property of 7 households in the village. In addition to Phuong Tru village, the villages of Quoc Tien, Thong Nhat, and Trung Thanh have all experienced landslides due to heavy rains in recent days.
Through the review of the Flood and Storm Prevention Command of Cam Xuyen district, the entire Cam Due commune currently has 14 landslides along the banks of Ngan Mo river, including 4 dangerous landslides with a total length of about 150m, directly affecting 12 households.
The land under the wall of Mr. Tran Van Hai's livestock farm was deeply dug.
Present at the landslide site in Thong Nhat village, we witnessed the land below the wall of the outbuilding and the pig pen of Mr. Tran Van Hai's family being eroded by water, at risk of collapsing at any time. "The landslide is getting more and more serious, if the heavy rain continues and Ke Go lake releases floodwaters, it will be even more dangerous. To protect my property, I have evacuated my pigs. Now the biggest worry is that the landslide will directly affect my house because the house foundation is currently less than 3m from the riverbank," said Mr. Tran Van Hai.
It is known that the landslides along the banks of the Ngan Mo River in Cam Due Commune are all vertical abysses. Therefore, the work of overcoming the landslides is extremely difficult. The previous solution was that the local government reinforced them with stone cages, but it was still not enough. After a heavy rain, some old landslides were washed away by water and eroded in new locations.
The water level of Ngan Mo River rose after many days of heavy rain, sweeping away many trees on both sides of the river.
Mr. Dang Van Thanh - Vice Chairman of Cam Due Commune People's Committee shared: "On the evening of October 30, we evacuated 4 households with 21 people in dangerous landslide locations to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. Cam Xuyen District People's Committee also issued an official dispatch to urgently handle landslides along the banks of Ngan Mo River. Accordingly, the district requested the commune to proactively arrange human resources, materials, and means to continue handling landslides; especially the landslide in Phuong Tru village; required the use of concrete piles, stone cages, combined with other reinforcing materials, ensuring completion before 5:00 p.m. on November 3, 2023".
However, reinforcement with concrete piles and stone cages is only a temporary solution. In the long term, local authorities and people in landslide-affected areas hope that all levels and sectors will pay attention to supporting funding to thoroughly resolve the landslide situation; to avoid people from being confused, insecure, and worried every time there is a flood.
