The United Nations General Assembly has adopted its first resolution on protecting human rights, protecting personal data and monitoring risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
The US-sponsored resolution was adopted on March 21 by consensus of more than 120 member states without a vote. The resolution aims to promote safe, secure and trustworthy AI systems to bring benefits and sustainable development to the community. This is the latest initiative by governments around the world to shape the development of AI in the context of many countries' concerns that artificial intelligence is being used to disrupt democratic processes, increase the risk of fraud, serious job losses and many other consequences.
According to the resolution, the development and use of artificial intelligence systems that are inappropriate or malicious can create risks that may undermine the protection, promotion and enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The UN General Assembly has highlighted the importance of respecting, protecting and promoting human rights in the design, development and use of AI. At the same time, the UN calls on all Member States and stakeholders to refrain from using AI systems that are inconsistent with international human rights law or pose undue risks to human rights practices.
The resolution calls on member states to cooperate in supporting developing countries to enjoy or achieve inclusive and equitable access, narrowing the digital divide and improving digital literacy.
Linda Thomas Greenfield, US Ambassador to the United Nations, pledged to bridge the digital divide between countries and use AI to advance shared priorities related to sustainable development. The UN also recognized the potential of AI to promote and realize the 17 sustainable development goals initiated by the agency.
