Hoa Binh, Ninh Thuan, Ho Chi Minh City... all welcome first graders on August 21, the remaining grades on August 28; only Nghe An allows all students to return to school on August 28.
One week after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the framework plan for the 2023-2024 school year, many provinces and cities also announced the school opening and opening schedules for students.
Most follow the Ministry's framework, which is to welcome first graders on August 22, and the remaining grades on August 29. However, because these two days fall on Tuesday, some localities such as Hoa Binh, Ninh Thuan, Ho Chi Minh City, and Yen Bai let students return to school a day earlier, starting from Monday. Only Nghe An chose only one date, August 28, for schools to welcome students of all grades.
Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ca Mau and Hanoi have not yet officially set the school opening date, but have tentative plans. Except for Ca Mau, which can let preschoolers and students of all levels go back to school on the same day, August 25, the schedule for Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Hanoi is August 21 and 28, for grade 1 and the remaining grades.

Although the school opening date is different, all localities hold the opening ceremony on September 5.
According to the Ministry's plan, schools will finish the first semester before January 15 and the second semester before May 25, 2024. For grade 5 and grade 9 students, the recognition of completion of primary school and graduation from secondary school must be considered before June 30. Admission to the first level (grades 1, 6, 10) must be completed by July 31.
In case of natural disasters or epidemics, the school start date and school year will be extended, but not more than 15 days compared to the regulations. The Director of the Department of Education and Training can decide on this matter and arrange make-up classes to ensure that students have 32-35 weeks of actual study.

The school year plan framework issued by the Ministry of Education and Training is applied to public schools. For private schools, schools can start school 4 weeks early, according to Circular 13/2011 of the Ministry. Therefore, on August 1, many private schools in Hanoi allowed students to come to school to get acquainted or start the main curriculum.
