Receiving the elderly for voluntary care at the Social Work Center and Children's Support Fund of Thua Thien Hue province
Since 2017, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province has agreed to pilot the service of caring for and nurturing the elderly who voluntarily contribute funds to live at the Social Work Center and the Children's Protection Fund (referred to as the Center). After the implementation period, in the first year only a few elderly people knew about and lived there, but now it has spread to the grassroots level, so many people know about it and contact to learn more and live there. The number of elderly people voluntarily living in the "common house" has been constantly increasing, each year is higher than the previous year. In particular, the Center always takes the satisfaction of the elderly to serve, as the "Guideline" for the staff to implement and as a measure to evaluate the results of completing tasks at the end of the year of each person.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhan (69 years old, residing in Tan Dinh ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) is one of the elderly people currently living at the Center on a voluntary basis. Talking to us, Ms. Nhan said that she is a retired official and has lived alone in Ho Chi Minh City for many years. Because she has no relatives and is afraid that as she gets older and her health declines, especially during the epidemic, Ms. Nhan wants to have a good place to take care of her so that she can live her last days comfortably and happily, with people of the same age to keep her company. Through relatives in Hue, she learned that the Center provides this service, so she moved here in April 2022. "As a retired official who used to live in a collective, I find life at the Center very suitable, with fresh air and a team of caring, dedicated, and responsible staff, so I always feel secure and want to stay here until the end of my life," Ms. Nhan shared.
Also a retired cadre, Mr. Nguyen Duc Ha (63 years old, residing in Binh Tien commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien Hue), has been living at the Center for nearly 2 years. Talking about the reason for choosing this service, Mr. Ha said that his children are now grown up and have their own lives, while he is old and cannot work. "Here, besides the enthusiastic and friendly service attitude of the staff, the care and nurturing regime is very guaranteed, the living hours are suitable for the elderly, and there are rules and regulations," said Mr. Ha.
According to the leaders of the Social Work Center and the Children's Support Fund of Thua Thien Hue province, since the implementation of the Project, the unit has received, cared for and nurtured 47 elderly people. Currently, there are 30 people living at the Center, including those who have been attached to the "common home" since the first days of opening the service such as Ms. Nguyen Thi Lai (76 years old), Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue (81 years old), .... and every year, many people come to learn about and are satisfied with this service.
When living at the Center, volunteers will be arranged suitable, spacious and airy rooms with full living facilities; their property will be guaranteed safety, their personal information will be kept confidential; they will be respected, cared for, listened to and shared with... The Center provides a daily diet with full nutrition, ensuring food hygiene and safety, and food suitable for each person's age and physical condition.
To take good care of volunteers and improve the quality of services, the unit arranges staff with good expertise and skills; regularly sends them to attend training courses and related professional development courses. At the same time, always arrange staff on duty 24/7 to perform the following tasks: management, health monitoring, hygiene, and support for volunteers when they are sick.
Elderly people living at the Social Work Center and Children's Protection Fund of Thua Thien Hue province are always cared for and looked after wholeheartedly and thoughtfully.
However, many people still do not know about the voluntary elderly care and nurturing service that the Center is implementing. People still face cultural barriers and prejudices about sending their parents to a care facility as being unfilial, so the number of people living there has not reached the desired target.
Determining that the voluntary elderly care and nurturing service will be used by many elderly people in the coming time, the Center always focuses on investing in: facilities, improving the quality of care, promoting rehabilitation, building a green - clean - bright living environment, ... to make volunteers always satisfied with the unit's services. Although knowing that it is difficult to implement this new service because this is a new field, people's needs are diverse and rich, the Center's collective is determined to do a good job of the service, gaining the trust and satisfaction of volunteers through scientific management and operation, with good service quality, professionalism in caring for and nurturing the elderly, striving to attract more and more elderly people to live at the Center.
