On June 9, Hanoi People's Court sentenced defendant Do Duy Truong (born 1974, Hai Ba Trung district) to life in prison for murder.
According to the accusation, at about 8:00 p.m. on March 11, 1994, defendant Truong was drinking at the house of Mr. Tran Nguyen Hung (born in 1955) in To Hoang dyke alley, Cau Den ward, Hai Ba Trung district, when his neighbor, Mr. Do Doan H. (born in 1969), came and called Truong to come out and talk.
At this time, a conflict arose between the two. Mr. H. slapped the defendant 2-3 times in the face and then left. Meanwhile, Mr. Truong returned to Mr. Hung's shop to continue drinking.
Then, Mr. Truong walked into the house of Mr. Tran Nguyen Son (Mr. Hung's younger brother). In the living room, Mr. Truong saw Mr. H. lying on the sofa.

Still upset about being slapped, Mr. Truong pulled out a kitchen knife, went to where Mr. H. was lying, swung the knife and stabbed the victim once in the left chest.
Being attacked, Mr. H. cried out: "I've been stabbed" and stood up, blood spurting from his chest. Then, the victim continued to cry out: "Oh my God" and collapsed to the ground.
The stab wound penetrated the pericardium and cut along the root of the pulmonary artery, causing blood to flood the pericardium and chest cavity, causing Mr. H. to die on the way to the emergency room.
On the defendant's side, after committing the crime, he pulled the knife out of Mr. H's chest and fled. On August 19, 2022, Mr. Truong was arrested by the Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security according to a wanted notice.
During his time on the run, the defendant drifted to Kien Giang province, then illegally entered Thailand by sea and was arrested by the Thai Navy.
When arrested, Mr. Truong claimed to be Cambodian (cannot remember his name) and was sentenced to 7 months in prison, then deported to Cambodia.
During his time in Cambodia, the defendant hired someone to forge a Vietnamese passport under the name Nguyen Van Tuyen. In 2008, the defendant used this passport to enter Thailand and live in the capital city of Bangkok.
In May 2012, Mr. Truong was arrested by the Royal Thai Police for "Illegal trading and possession of drugs" and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
In October 2021, the defendant was granted amnesty and transferred to the Thai Immigration Detention Center (IDC) in Bangkok to await deportation procedures to Vietnam.
During the entire process of being arrested by the Royal Thai Police, serving the sentence, and being taken to the Thai Immigration Detention Center (IDC) in Bangkok, defendant Truong gave a fake name, Nguyen Van Tuyen.
In March 2022, because he could not get a passport to return to his country, the defendant had to declare his real name as Do Duy Truong. On June 29, 2022, the defendant Truong was issued a passport by the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand and was then arrested under a wanted notice issued by the Hanoi Police.
During the investigation of the case after 28 years, the defendant did not admit to using a knife to stab the victim to death. The defendant said that during the struggle with the victim, the knife accidentally stabbed Mr. H in the chest.
After the incident, "big brother" Ha Thanh pulled the knife from Mr. H's chest, took the weapon and ran along the To Lich River to the University of Science and Technology. While running away, the defendant slipped and dropped the knife.
The investigation agency took statements from indirect witnesses, the results were consistent with the crime scene investigation report, the autopsy report and believed there was sufficient basis to charge the defendant with a crime.
