For the past week, all 67 preschool students of Nam Det village, Nam Det commune, Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province have been temporarily transferred to study at the Nam Cai village cultural house. To organize teaching, teachers have to divide students into 2 classes, in cramped conditions, lacking equipment and playgrounds. However, both teachers and students are trying to overcome this, because when the village's preschool is at high risk of landslides, this is the optimal solution to ensure safety.

Teacher Lam Thi Thanh, Nam Det Kindergarten said: "2-year-old children cry a lot when they first come to class, which affects the 4-5 year old group. Despite the difficulties, we still encourage and take care of the children to ensure the learning program."

After the flood, the hill behind Nan San Secondary School, Nan San Commune, Si Ma Cai District, appeared to have landslides and long cracks, posing a safety risk. All 243 students were moved to study at the commune's Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.

Teacher Nguyen Duc Luu, the school's principal, said: "Since the storm, we have stopped studying for the first week to move according to instructions and have had no classes due to moving to a new school location. We will arrange make-up classes and extra classes to ensure that we follow the school year plan."

In Simacai district, floods and landslides have caused damage to 20 schools and school sites. Currently, 36 schools and school sites have resumed teaching and learning activities. Only 1 main school and 2 school sites with more than 380 students are still unable to attend school.

"For schools that can arrange for on-site learning, we will organize teaching in safe locations and classrooms. For schools and school locations that are not safe, we have lent them to the schools. If the school locations are far from each other, we will instruct the schools to borrow people's houses to organize learning," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Oanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Si Ma Cai district, Lao Cai province.

The recent historic floods have caused serious consequences for the education sector in Lao Cai. The whole province has more than 140 schools and school sites that have been eroded, flooded and affected. With the view of resuming teaching and learning activities but ensuring absolute safety, many flexible solutions are being implemented by the local education sector such as: temporarily borrowing cultural houses, old schools or private houses, arranging to study 2 main sessions a day... Teachers and students in the flooded areas of Lao Cai are trying to overcome difficulties, striving to complete the tasks of the 2024-2025 school year.
