According to Engadget , for many years, Call of Duty has been a familiar name at the top of the best-selling game charts. However, this year everyone was surprised when this 'ruler' was dethroned by a new name: Hogwarts Legacy .
According to a report by media research firm Circana, Hogwarts Legacy has excelled in taking the number 1 position with about 22 million copies sold in 2023. This is an impressive achievement, especially when the game has faced many controversies since its launch, both regarding its connection to author JK Rowling and issues with the game's content.
Ranking of the best-selling games of 2023
However, the appeal of the wizarding world of Harry Potter is undeniable. After decades of anticipation, gamers are finally immersed in a Hogwarts world as open and realistic as they dreamed. The sales results are proof of that.
Previously, only Grand Theft Auto V (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) had ever knocked Call of Duty off the top spot. Both Rockstar titles created cultural sensations and had a huge impact. Despite being highly rated, Hogwarts Legacy has not reached that level. So maybe this is a sign that gamers are 'overfed' with Call of Duty or Modern Warfare III because of its lack of appeal.
In addition to Hogwarts Legacy , the rankings also have other notable names including:
- Madden NFL 24
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)
- Mario Kart 8
Notably, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which ranked at number five, is just 2.5 million copies behind Hogwarts Legacy. However, since Nintendo keeps eShop sales data private, this chart only includes digital sales through September. If the last four months of the year are taken into account, including the holiday season, Tears of the Kingdom is likely to dethrone Hogwarts Legacy .
