On September 11, the National Children's Hospital initially reported that two children suffered serious complications after receiving hepatitis B vaccination at Vinh Phuc Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital.
According to Mr. Tran Minh Dien, Director of the National Children's Hospital, these two children are 1-day-old twins, who were vaccinated against hepatitis B by medical staff of the Obstetrics Department, Vinh Phuc Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital on the morning of September 10. At about 11:45 a.m. the same day, one child suddenly turned purple, had difficulty breathing, had respiratory failure and died. At 3:00 p.m. the same day, the other boy also showed similar symptoms, was given emergency care and transferred to the National Children's Hospital. After receiving emergency care, this boy was out of danger.
The leader of the National Children's Hospital also said that in recent years, the hospital has encountered about 10 cases of death after hepatitis B vaccination, but the cause was not due to vaccination. Children are often vaccinated against hepatitis B immediately after birth, while the symptoms of severe congenital metabolic disorders appear after 1 day of breastfeeding. A representative of Vinh Phuc Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said that the hospital is coordinating with the authorities to determine the cause; at the same time, reporting the incident to the authorities and coordinating with the Department of Health and Vinh Phuc Provincial Police to investigate the cause of the child's death.
