Heart palpitations, palpitations: 4 things to avoid

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên08/01/2025

A rapid heartbeat can last for just a few seconds to a few minutes. In most cases, these symptoms are harmless. But in some people, they are a warning sign of a serious heart problem.

There are many factors that lead to an abnormally fast heartbeat, from underlying diseases, stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, hormonal changes and even diet. What we eat will greatly affect our heart rate, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

If your heart beats fast with chest pain and difficulty breathing, you should see a doctor as soon as possible because it could be a heart attack.

When detecting an abnormally fast heartbeat, causing a feeling of palpitations, people should avoid eating or drinking the following foods:

Alcohol

Alcohol is a stimulant. When it enters the body, it activates the sympathetic nervous system. This results in an increased heart rate and a feeling of anxiety. Not only that, alcohol also has a diuretic effect, which means it draws water out of the body. If you do not drink enough water, your body will easily become dehydrated.

Dehydration reduces blood volume and circulation. To ensure blood is pumped to the body's organs, the heart has to work harder, leading to an increased heart rate.

Heart palpitations need to limit caffeine

Caffeine is another stimulant. One thing to keep in mind is that caffeine is not only found in coffee and tea, but also in energy drinks, soda, and chocolate. People who experience rapid heartbeats should limit their intake of caffeine-rich foods.

Processed foods

Processed foods like chips, candy, packaged baked goods, and deli meats are often high in salt and unhealthy fats. These ingredients not only increase your heart rate but are also detrimental to your heart health.

Many research evidences show that eating a lot of processed foods also increases blood cholesterol levels, makes it difficult to control blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Spicy food

Spicy foods containing chili peppers are considered to be good for your health. Because chili peppers contain very beneficial antioxidants such as capsaicin, vitamin C, carotenoids and flavonoids. These antioxidants have the effect of supporting immunity, digestion and preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

However, people who often have a rapid heartbeat should be careful when eating spicy food. Eating food that is too spicy will cause many physiological reactions in the body, leading to increased heart rate and causing anxiety.

Experts note that if the rapid heartbeat occurs frequently, becomes increasingly severe, lasts a long time, or is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, according to Medical News Today .
