Although lemon has many health benefits, if consumed incorrectly it can cause many harmful effects.
Drinking lemon juice can cure... cancer!?
Recently, on social networks, there has been a rumor about drinking lemon juice in the morning to cure "all diseases".
Specifically, on his personal Facebook page, an account named PTX shared his experience of drinking high doses of lemon juice in the morning on an empty stomach.
Ms. X. said that currently every morning she drinks about 15 small lemons or 10 large lemons, equivalent to 200-250ml of lemon juice and tries to increase it to 500ml.
An account named NMT is also drinking 300-400ml of lemon juice every morning. Mr. T. shared that drinking lemon juice like this helps him detoxify his body.
There is even a rumor that lung cancer patients who drink 4 liters of water mixed with lemon per day can live healthy for many years without treatment.
And many people claim to be doctors and give advice on the health benefits of drinking lemon juice in the morning.
A Facebook account claiming to be Dr. Ch. informed: "When lemon enters the body, it transforms into alkaline and alkalizes the body very strongly. Lemon helps reduce blood sugar and regulate blood pressure. Lemon cures the stomach and protects the digestive system very well."
This account also asserts that "you should drink lemon juice on an empty stomach. Lemon helps the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and intestines detoxify strongly.
The acids in lemon also help stimulate bile production, after drinking lemon for 10 minutes, you will have to go to the toilet heavily".
Be careful, don't hurt yourself because of the trend.
Referring to this trend, Dr. Doan Thu Hong, Nutrition Clinic, Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that a medium-sized lemon (about 48g) contains 10.6 kcal of energy; 18.6mg (milligrams) of vitamin C; 9.6mcg (micrograms) of vitamin B9 (Folate); 49.4mg of potassium; 0.01mcg of vitamin B1; 0.01mcg of vitamin B2 and 0.06mcg of vitamin B3.
So it can be seen that lemon is a fruit that is very low in calories but rich in vitamin C.
In particular, a lemon contains up to 18.6 mg of vitamin C - about 21% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.
In addition, science has proven that lemon has a number of benefits such as: improving the immune system, supporting cardiovascular health, preventing kidney stones, improving skin, supporting digestion, and increasing iron absorption.
Although lemon has many health benefits, Dr. Hong said that drinking lemon juice incorrectly can cause many consequences.
For example, drinking too much lemon every day, drinking on an empty stomach or drinking lemon juice without diluting it with filtered water can all cause adverse effects on health.
First, it is harmful to the stomach because of the high acid content in lemon. Therefore, if you drink too much lemon, drink undiluted lemon juice or drink it on an empty stomach, it can cause stomach ulcers, reflux, heartburn, etc.
Next, because lemons are very sour, drinkers may accidentally add a large amount of sugar to the lemonade to make it easier to drink.
This amount of added sugar can have many harmful effects on health such as increasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, blood pressure...
In addition, the citric acid in lemons can erode tooth enamel, causing tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, and tooth weakness. Lemons can also make mouth ulcers more painful and take longer to heal.
Finally, lemons contain the amino acid tyramine. Therefore, drinking too much lemon juice will cause excess of this acid and cause blood to suddenly rush to the brain, causing migraines.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, director of the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital, has received many critically ill patients hospitalized after following online remedies.
Recently, the hospital also had many people who drank alkaline water and fasted to cure their illness and ended up in critical condition.
Doctor Nguyen warns that following treatment regimens and propaganda without scientific basis is very dangerous and can even lead to death.
Currently, there are many medical advertisements that exaggerate the effects to attract others to seek treatment that is unprofessional, unscientific, harmful to patients, and even causes the risk of death...
Experts recommend that everyone should create a habit of daily exercise and have a healthy lifestyle.
Limit the use of added sugar, bad fats, alcoholic beverages, cigarettes; avoid staying up late, stress… These notes will help improve the immune system as well as overall health.
