Lai Ly Huynh defeated Chinese player - Manh Than - in the final match of the World Rapid Chess Championship. The Vietnamese player won 6 matches and drew 3 matches, to finish with 15 points. He was 2 points ahead of the second place.
Lai Ly Huynh successfully defended his World Rapid Chess Championship title. In the first edition held last year, Lai Ly Huynh also overcame many strong opponents to win the gold medal.
This year's tournament had about 70 players regardless of age and gender participating, from China, Canada, England, etc. In addition to Lai Ly Huynh winning the gold medal, another Vietnamese player, Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang, won the bronze medal.

The World Rapid Chess Championship takes place at the same location as the World Standard Chess Championship, in Houston, Texas.
In the final of the men's individual standard chess event, Lai Li Huynh made it to the final. However, he lost to Meng Shen of China.
After 8 games, Lai Ly Huynh won 13 points, leading with Manh Than to play in the final match. Ngo Tong Han finished third with 12 points, so he missed the chance to play in the gold medal match.
Lai Ly Huynh had the advantage of going first. However, he miscalculated his move and let Manh Than bring the game back to balance. Tied after 101 moves in the standard game, the two players played a rapid chess tie-break.
Meng Shen went first and won after 35 moves. China maintains its record of 18 world championships in standard chess.
The World Standard Chess Championship is held every two years. This is the first year the US has hosted the tournament. The tournament has 13 participating teams, with the following standard chess events: individual men's, women's, team men's, women's, U16 men's, women's, U12 men's, women's.
The Vietnamese delegation participated with players Lai Ly Huynh, Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang (male), Nguyen Hoang Yen, Le Thi Kim Loan (female). The young players included Phan Huy Hoang, Ngo Xuan Gia Huy, Khuu Nhat Phi, Dinh Tran Thanh Lam, Tran Nguyen Minh Nhat, Do Pham Nhat Minh, Ngo Ho Thanh Truc, Nguyen Hoang My, Le The Bao, Do Nguyen Lan Anh and Tran Nguyen Minh Hang.
The Vietnamese team won 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals. Tran Nguyen Minh Hang won the gold medal in the U12 group.
