Flying Camel is the first collection of short stories by Gen Z author Vo Dang Khoa. He chose to write about things he could observe thoroughly with deep understanding and genuine emotions, evoking empathy in readers.
The 148-page book, published by Tre Publishing House, includes 10 short stories: Looking at the water, End of the beach, The land blooms, Flying camel, Upstream, Releasing bait, Following the herd, The mirror, Leaving Binh Da and Under the tile roof.
Reading Flying Camel by Vo Dang Khoa, the West appears with ferry docks, kitchens, rivers, smoke, rice fields, and people whose stories few people pay attention to.
But Dang Khoa paid attention.
He listens, observes every little detail and tells it in his own way, "because every life story has something worth listening to."
Cutting through every small slice of life, the author gathers into a short story collection pieces of life with very personal stories and tells them with sympathy, respect and love.
Write about the torments that haunt people throughout life in a calm, indifferent, but haunting way.
Simple and calm, Dang Khoa writes about the small pieces of human life. Then gently, he leaves somewhere between the sentences a lingering feeling.
"The sunsets are golden, golden, and more golden against the background of the flying sand dunes. The silhouettes of camels, against the sun, dark, leisurely carrying on their backs sacks of goods and people. A beautiful picture, a scene very typical of sand, of wind, of the vast desert of sand and wind.
….
The camels will fly, in five minutes!" , excerpt from the book.
Flying Camel depicts many lives - where, sometimes, people have to suffer, injustice. The book brings strangers, in a setting that is sometimes incredibly familiar - because it is there, who knows, that people see themselves?
Writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu commented that Vo Dang Khoa is mature, confident, has a rich imagination and is delicate in details. Reading Flying Camel , she did not feel that this was the first collection of stories by an author who had just turned twenty.
"With a poetic, modern writing style that quickly transcends regional barriers, compassionate without sentimentality, revealing without getting carried away with narrative, Khoa soberly explores the joys and sorrows of life, looking into the inner world of people who, despite being crushed, still sparkle," said writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu.
