(CLO) Within the framework of the Creative Design Festival 2024, on November 14 in Hanoi, Tre Publishing House organized a discussion "Of streets and people - The image of Hanoi in the flow of contemporary literature", helping to emphasize the presence of Hanoi in the flow of contemporary literature.
Attending the discussion, cultural experts, writers, and sculptors expanded on the issue of defining "Hanoi", discussing the reality and changes of the capital throughout history, and the identity of Hanoians in different generations.
At the discussion, writer Do Phan shared that there have been many changes in the capital Hanoi today, from space, living environment to people's habits and lifestyles. There are small changes but also big changes, there are beneficial changes and also many bad changes, all of which have become the premise for writers.
Writer Do Phan shared at the discussion.
Writer Do Phan said that Hanoi has changed a lot but there are things that have not changed, which are the discipline, style and behavior of Hanoians. Although now, many old Hanoians have left the core area to live in the outskirts of the city, their personality and behavior, even though small, even though only like a drop of ink in West Lake, still exist.
"It persists year after year, month after month, it just drips into West Lake like that and at some point that character will spread. And we are not afraid that Hanoi will disappear because it will still remain in each of us with that same character," writer Do Phan emphasized.
According to writer Do Phan, in the changes of Hanoi, of course there will be gains and losses. He sees that urban people today do not have the same lifestyle as urban people in the past and that students today write less poetry than students in the past.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thach believes that Hanoi has steadfast authors.
Talking about the perception that change is the destiny of Hanoi, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Xuan Thach said that Hanoi has changed both in terms of landscape and population since the opening up. A specific example is that if in the 1980s, standing on the top floor of the Hanoi Children's Palace, one could see the Red River, now it is impossible. "Hanoi has different houses and buildings standing next to each other and the cause of Hanoi's chaos is due to the inability to manage its changes, especially in urban planning and management," Associate Professor Dr. Pham Xuan Thach added.
Seeing the chaos in the people of Hanoi, sculptor Dinh Cong Dat said: "Hanoi is a chaotic city but that is Hanoi. I do not support chaos but I have to accept it, in my opinion, that is the unique quality of Hanoi that has not been lost."
According to sculptor Dinh Cong Dat, compared to many other cities in the world, the capital Hanoi is very lively and full of life energy, providing a lot of motivation to move forward. Because Hanoi always has to "carry" legendary beauties such as Hanoians must be gallant, elegant, graceful, sophisticated or milk flowers must be fragrant and autumn must be beautiful, but the media also brings up stories such as "scolding noodles, cursing porridge" and many bad images of Hanoi.

"Hanoi is one of the few cities in Vietnam that has writers who are steadfast in their commitment to it. Because it is an old and sustainable city, Hanoi attracts great attention from literature and gradually forms a cultural accumulation factor. And in each era, literature about Hanoi will tell different stories," Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Xuan Thach expressed.
The presentations and opinions of experts, writers and sculptors at today's discussion contributed to the interpretation of Hanoi's cultural layers in the literary and artistic flow of contemporary Hanoi authors and helped audiences and readers have the opportunity to approach typical writers and authors in generations that have the continuity and evolution of literature about Hanoi.
