(Fatherland) - On December 4, the People's Committee of Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province organized a meeting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hoi An Ancient Town being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage (December 4, 1999 - December 4, 2024).
Speaking at the program, Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh, Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that at this time 25 years ago - December 4, 1999 - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially listed Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary as World Cultural Heritage.
25 years of becoming a World Cultural Heritage - a journey that may still be too short in the hundreds of years of formation and development of Hoi An Ancient Town. But the journey of the past 25 years bears the mark of a new era of Hoi An - a period when cultural heritage values are preserved and promoted to shine and flourish.
"Over the past 25 years - since the day Hoi An Ancient Town was honored as a World Cultural Heritage, it is also a historical journey in which the land and people of Hoi An continue to be deeply imprinted with the affection, efforts, and special attention of the Central and Quang Nam provincial leaders, of many comrades and friends, and the goodwill help and support of domestic and international organizations and individuals. Thanks to that, Hoi An culture is increasingly recognized more fully as a complex of historical, cultural, humanistic, and urban architectural heritage," said Mr. Lanh.

The Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee shared that, looking back over the past 25 years, the Party Committee, government and people of Hoi An have made continuous efforts and persistent determination to build a dynamic and unique ecological - cultural - tourist city. The ancient urban architectural complex in particular and Hoi An cultural heritage in general have been managed, preserved and promoted better and more effectively, and have been highly appreciated by UNESCO and international organizations, and have been awarded many awards.
Hoi An Cultural Heritage has truly become the foundation, launching pad, driving force and goal of socio-economic development, contributing effectively to the development of Hoi An tourism and service economy, increasing income and improving people's lives. The relationship of interests between the State and the people, the relationship between preserving cultural heritage and optimally meeting the living needs of contemporary residents has been fundamentally resolved.
Hoi An's cultural heritage created by our ancestors throughout history has overcome the harsh impacts of the natural environment, social upheavals, and the devastation of war, and to this day is still cherished, preserved, conserved, and promoted creatively and effectively by many generations of Hoi An people.
"With the unique values of the Old Quarter - World Cultural Heritage, along with the charming beauty of Cu Lao Cham - World Biosphere Reserve, charming landscapes, rich intangible cultural treasures, clean and beautiful landscape environment, healthy and safe cultural and social environment, enthusiastic and friendly people... Hoi An has created a strong attraction for tourists to visit, scientists to research, artists to enjoy and create, investors to cooperate in business", Mr. Lanh emphasized.

According to Mr. Lanh, today's achievements are the crystallization of the intelligence, sweat and efforts of many generations of Hoi An people who have joined hands to create and build. We are increasingly imbued with the core values from the historical process that our ancestors worked hard to create and the valuable lessons that previous generations have learned and passed on to today and to the future. This is also an opportunity for us to warm up our enthusiasm, raise the sense of responsibility of the community for the cause of preserving cultural heritage, preserving biodiversity and developing sustainable tourism to serve the economic-cultural-social development goals of the city.
According to Vice Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Ho Quang Buu, up to now in our country, Quang Nam is the only province with 3 world titles recognized by UNESCO, including 2 World Cultural Heritages: Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Temple Complex and 1 World Biosphere Reserve Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An.
Both world cultural heritages, Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, were recognized by UNESCO on December 4, 1999. That further affirms the cultural depth with many unique, outstanding characteristics, imbued with the identity of our beloved Quang Nam land; it is the pride of the people of Hoi An city and Duy Xuyen district.
The Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam province believes that, with the cultural tradition, experience, creativity, high determination of the political system, together with the companionship, assistance and participation of all levels, central sectors, and the heritage-loving community at home and abroad, the World Cultural Heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town will continue to be preserved and its value will be effectively promoted in contemporary life; contributing to building Hoi An into an ecological - cultural - tourist city by 2030, aiming to establish the role of Hoi An as a driving force in the development of tourism - services of the Central Coast region and the whole country, reaching out to the Asian region, and becoming an attractive destination of the world.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Thanh - Deputy Director of the Department of Heritage Management (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), it can be affirmed that in the past 25 years, despite many pressures, with the joint efforts and support of all parties, the journey of preserving and promoting the value of the world cultural heritage of Hoi An ancient town has achieved many milestones and achievements. It has been evaluated by domestic and foreign organizations as a typical example of preserving and promoting the value of cultural heritage.
"We can affirm that the work of preserving the ancient urban heritage of Hoi An has been meeting the principles and requirements for preserving relics and world heritage according to the law on cultural heritage and the Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage that Vietnam has participated in," said Mr. Thanh.
Also in the morning of the same day, Hoi An City People's Committee organized a parade to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hoi An Ancient Town being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage.
