Two new records were set at the 2023 Mekong Delta Hau Giang International Marathon on July 16. Hoang Nguyen Thanh has long been Vietnam's leading athlete in the 42km race, so he had no trouble finishing the race spectacularly.
Importantly, Hoang Nguyen Thanh set a time of 2 hours 37 minutes 4 seconds, breaking the record of his opponent Bui The Anh, who won this tournament in 2020 with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes 46 seconds. Thanh won a prize of 17 million VND for the winner, and received an additional 50 million VND for the new record. The Organizing Committee, including the People's Committee of Hau Giang province and Nexus Company, also awarded Nguyen Thanh a special prize: participating in 1 of the 6 prestigious marathons in the world.
Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Hoa awarded 50 million VND to 2 athletes who broke records in the 42 km men's and women's categories.
Similarly, Le Thi Tuyet also received the same prize as Hoang Nguyen Thanh, which is 67 million VND.
The first prizes for the 21km distance for men and women were awarded to Le Huu Loc and Nguyen Thi Phuong Trinh, and the first prizes for the 5km distance were awarded to Nguyen Anh Tri and Tran Anh Thu. In addition, for the first time, the Organizing Committee also awarded prizes from 4th to 10th place for the 42km distance for men and women and awarded prizes to clubs, teams, and age groups.
An old man runs to the finish line
Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Hoa said: "Despite unfavorable weather conditions with heavy rain, nearly 9,000 athletes tried their best, competed with all their might, completed the race completely, leaving many beautiful impressions in the hearts of viewers. There were many athletes from France, Japan, Singapore, and some old men who participated very actively, creating many unforgettable images. In addition to professional success, the highlight of this tournament is still continuing to maintain tree planting activities on the green route "Mekong Delta Marathon Hau Giang", to promote the message of a green Hau Giang, combating climate change, and building a green, clean and beautiful Hau Giang province".
Too many athletes participating in the 2023 tournament
This is the fourth time the tournament has taken place in Hau Giang with an increasingly expanding scale. In 2019, there were only 4,200 athletes, in 2020 there were 7,200 athletes, in 2021 there was a disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2022 there were 8,500 athletes, including 47 athletes from 18 foreign delegations. This time, the number of nearly 9,000 athletes shows that the tournament is growing stronger and stronger, creating a strong attraction.
Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee Dong Van Thanh awarded the prize to the female athlete who won the 42 km event.
