The forum took place in the context of a sharp drop in raw shrimp prices, causing shrimp farmers in many provinces in the Mekong Delta to decide to "hang up their ponds".

Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Pham Van Thieu said that currently in the province, there are 25 companies and over 800 households implementing the super-intensive shrimp farming model applying high technology, with a total area of over 4,600 hectares and 5 enterprises have been granted Certificates of high-tech agricultural enterprises.

According to Mr. Pham Van Thieu, the development of high-tech shrimp farming models as it is today shows many outstanding advantages but always raises issues of economic benefits and environmental protection. If we pursue immediate economic benefits while the problem of pollution and discharge into the environment is not handled, it will become a big problem in the future, especially in the aquaculture sector, which must use and depend on water resources. Therefore, high-tech shrimp farming in the future must aim for sustainable efficiency in both economy and environment.

At the forum, delegates shared the difficulties and challenges in shrimp farming in general and high-tech shrimp farming in particular. They shared scientific and technical solutions to help reduce diseases, reduce costs and stabilize production in high-tech shrimp farming. They also discussed solutions to solve the shrimp market in 2023 and the following years.

Mr. Ta Hoang Nhiem, Chairman of Bac Lieu Shrimp Association, said that recently, the price of raw shrimp has decreased sharply, some types decreased by 30% - 40% compared to February and March 2023. In such a context, high input material prices have caused farmers' income to decrease, many cases falling into a state of loss.

The Chairman of the Bac Lieu Shrimp Association recommended that banks should quickly disburse the Government's VND10 trillion credit package, and that shrimp processing and exporting enterprises should step up purchasing to raise shrimp prices again. At the same time, he suggested that the relevant agencies strengthen management of feed, veterinary medicine for aquatic products, and shrimp seeds, minimizing the circulation of poor quality goods on the market, causing damage to farmers.
