How to check the beginning of the day so that every day at school is a happy day?

Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, suggested that teachers should not conduct oral tests at the beginning of class in the style of "suddenly calling, suddenly asking" because it will make students stressed and pressured before class. Mr. Hieu made this suggestion at the conference to summarize the 2022-2023 school year and deploy directions and tasks for the 2023-2024 school year in District 3.

Many teachers call this a highly professional and humane direction, aiming at the goal of building a happy school, "every day at school is a happy day". So, what should teachers do in assessing students?

It is not necessary to test at the beginning of the class but can be during the class.

Currently, secondary and high schools conduct assessments of secondary and high school students according to Circular 22 of 2021 of the Ministry of Education and Training. Specifically, regular assessments are conducted through the following forms: questions and answers, writing, presentations, practice, experiments, and learning products.

For a subject, each student is tested and evaluated many times. Periodic assessment (not conducted for clusters of learning topics) includes mid-term and final assessments through: tests (on paper or on computer), practice tests, and learning projects.

Testing students according to the lesson plan is shown in many forms, not only questions (oral tests) but also writing, presentations, practice, experiments, learning products, etc. Besides, testing does not necessarily have to take place at the beginning of the lesson but can be during the lesson.

Testing students according to the lesson plan is shown in many forms, not only questions (oral tests) but also writing, presentations, practice, experiments, learning products, etc.

Therefore, teachers should not "call suddenly, ask suddenly" because this will make students confused or lose their composure, which is not in line with the teaching method to develop capacity in the 2018 General Education Program.

Teachers can choose many different ways to test and evaluate students as guided in Circular 22 of the Ministry of Education and Training. Teachers can choose many ways to lead new lessons in a gentle and comfortable way, creating excitement for students when learning, avoiding causing unnecessary stress for students at the beginning of the class.

Gently test old knowledge

As a history teacher at Trinh Phong Secondary School (Dien Khanh, Khanh Hoa), I often ask questions at the beginning of class to give students a minute to think and then let them volunteer to answer. Many hands are raised, demonstrating their confidence.

The content of the questions is at a moderate level, ensuring the required knowledge and not challenging students, so the test is easy.

For example, when testing in the form of questions and answers on "The Soviet Union and Eastern European countries from 1945 to the mid-1970s of the 20th century (history 9)", I asked students to list the achievements of the Soviet Union in science and technology. Many students competed to answer correctly.

Teachers can incorporate questions to test previous knowledge throughout the lesson.

Or when teaching 8th grade history, section 2 "The War of Independence of the 13 British Colonies in North America", I asked the question: "Do you know why the American flag has 50 stars and 13 stripes?". Many students raised their hands to ask for an exact explanation.

I think teaching is an art, teachers need to be flexible and creative in testing students, as long as they understand and are interested in answering, it is a success. Testing old and new knowledge is a step to create excitement before starting the warm-up, helping the lesson to be successful.

Each lesson can be conducted in several periods, ensuring enough time for each activity for students to perform effectively. The teacher's task is to help students always feel interested, happy with learning and always look forward to going to school every day.

The 2018 General Education Program is built according to the orientation of developing students' abilities and qualities. These abilities and qualities are specified by the requirements to be achieved in each subject and level of education. The formation of knowledge is not only memorization and memorization, but importantly, through learning activities to form knowledge and apply learned knowledge to life. This is the requirement and goal to be achieved in the lesson for students. In Official Dispatch 5512 in 2020, the Ministry of Education and Training guides teachers on lesson planning through 4 activities including:

  • Activity 1, identify the problem/learning task/introduction;
  • Activity 2, forming new knowledge/solving problems/performing tasks set from previous activities;
  • Activity 3, practice;
  • Activity 4, application.
