Banks and financial institutions are always the units that are often impersonated by cybercriminal groups to defraud users.

In the content of 'Weekly News' from October 21 to October 27 about the situation of online fraud, the trick of using fake banking apps to defraud users' assets is one of the three common forms in Vietnam's cyberspace, warned by the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) to the people.

Fraudulent donations to support temples to appropriate property

Taking advantage of the fire at Van Phat Pagoda in Pleiku on September 22, in recent days, some scammers have created fake Facebook pages under the pagoda's name to call for donations in order to appropriate property.

Among them, there is a fake Facebook page created with the same interface and cover photo as the official page of Van Phat Pagoda; reposting many images, videos, and activities from the real page to create trust for viewers, even running ads on Facebook to reach many people and receive great interaction.

Some people who discovered this was a scam page commented to warn others. However, these people were all deleted and blocked by the subjects.

Tricking into installing fake banking apps to take control of the device

According to the Department of Information Security, the common trick of many scammers is to create websites, applications, and social networking sites impersonating banks, financial institutions, and payment intermediaries.

After approaching the victim in many ways, the scammer will steal personal information and carry out the scam scenario.

To deal with the authorities' frequent propaganda and warnings to the people, the scam scenarios are also constantly changing, such as inviting to upgrade credit cards; borrowing money online with easy procedures and low interest rates; notifying bank accounts of suspicious transactions; instructing to update biometrics...

In particular, the Department of Information Security clearly stated that users should be aware of the trick of installing fake banking apps: These applications contain malicious code, helping scammers take control of phones, steal information, transfer money, and appropriate property.

Recommending people to be vigilant against posts and information of unknown origin on social networks, the Information Security Department also recommends that users do not access strange links; do not follow instructions, do not transfer money to strangers; and do not provide sensitive personal information in any form.

Creating 'Health Consulting' groups on social networks to scam

The common trick of scammers is that after creating Fanpages and groups for 'Health Consulting' on social networks, they lure victims to join and advise them on buying oriental medicine to treat diseases with many attractive promotions.

Here, the subjects share information and videos using images of doctors and medical staff to advise and guide victims on how to use foods, or describe the uses of foods as real-life experiences or living witnesses of people who have suffered from the disease to increase persuasiveness.

Many people have been cheated out of money, and more dangerously, there is a risk of negative health effects from using products of unknown origin.
