While many people leave the city to return to the countryside or struggle to change their accommodation several times a year, there are many young people who have been attached to their accommodation since their student days until they get married and have children, becoming familiar spaces.

Coming to Thu Duc University Village (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), where there are many dormitories for students to rent, you can still see people who are already working.

In the workers' boarding houses, there are people who come to Ho Chi Minh City to make a living, staying in their boarding houses from when they are single until they get married and have children.

14 years, room price only increased by 500,000 VND

Coming to the workers' quarter in alley 36 Bui Van Ba (District 7) on the weekend, you can see the hustle and bustle of families cooking in front of their rented rooms. Some others take the opportunity to wash their motorbikes after a week of work. There are also families like Mr. Luong Trong The (44 years old) gathering together to watch movies.

Mr. The said that weekends are a rare time when the whole family is present. Because during the week, he and his wife have to work continuously from 7:30 am to almost 6 pm before returning home.

The two children also go to school, and only see each other for a moment at night before falling asleep.

Looking up at the ceiling, stained with time and peeling, he told me that 20 years ago he came to Ho Chi Minh City alone.

At first he worked in Thu Duc, then moved to District 7, rented a satisfactory apartment and has been there for the past 14 years.

The spacious house has more or less deteriorated after so many years, but Mr. The's rented room is taken care of like a new one.

Before going home for Tet, he always bought paint to fix the peeling spots. His wife couldn't stand the rough hands and feet, so she cleaned the room every day so it was always shiny.

Furniture is neatly arranged, especially the kitchen space is invested with everything from gas stove, blender, air fryer...

"I really appreciate this room. In the past ten years, the price has only increased by 500,000 VND and is currently 3 million VND/month. From this room, I have a place to rest and live after work, have a wife and children and a happy family," Mr. The confided.

Mr. The and his wife work for the same company and earn more than 20 million VND each month. Many times he planned to rent a bigger room but his wife objected, wanting to live alone to save money.

"Since having two children, the financial burden has increased significantly. I am lucky to be able to live in a rented room like this, and have money left over to take care of my children," said Mr. The.

8 years is the time that Mr. Nguyen Van Hai's wife (36 years old, living in Thu Duc City) moved to live with him after getting married. Mr. Hai's rented room is only about 18 square meters , but according to him, for just the two of them, that area is more than enough.

Mr. Hai made full use of the space in the room, all the furniture was arranged neatly and cleanly. He put shelves on the wall to save space, and he arranged cardboard boxes on the shelves to make small cabinets to store things. The room was also not lacking in amenities when he and his wife bought a refrigerator and a washing machine.

"I intend to stay here long term so I have to invest a little," said Mr. Hai.

Turn your dorm into a green office

Vy Thi Thanh (24 years old, living in Di An, Binh Duong ) has finished her university years but is still attached to her dormitory after four years of university until now.

Although they are in the same cheap boarding house, Thanh's room is different. She has added a bookshelf and a working corner right next to the window, neatly arranged on the desk she used to have when she was a student.

Thanh is attached to his current boarding house because of the familiarity during his time here and because it meets his current income.

Thanh said: "My rent is about 1/6 of my income, this is a reasonable amount for me to trade off the long distance to work. In total, including electricity and water, my monthly rent is around 1.3 - 1.4 million VND, still leaving a fair amount left over for other things."

Besides the cost, what has kept her in this rented room for nearly six years is the feeling of relaxation and comfort when she returns to her room. Having lived there all her student years, Thanh is familiar with many of her neighbors and landlords, and shopping in this area is also very convenient.

Thanh shared that he especially likes the quiet atmosphere in the University Village area instead of the hustle and bustle of the central districts.

But there are also things that she is not satisfied with. "I am not very satisfied with the water source of the boarding house, I have to buy my own filter to change regularly. When cooking, I have to use bottled water and do not dare to use the water directly from the boarding house," Thanh added.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung (28 years old, living in Go Vap) has turned her 25m2 rented room into a green space covered with trees.

Nhung lives alone and often works at home, so she decided to turn her rented room into a green office. "I really like plants, my job requires a lot of creativity, so I want my room to look comfortable. Only then will I be inspired to work," Nhung said.

To have such a satisfactory room, Ms. Nhung spent more than 10 million VND to buy plants and repaint. Her friends love to come to her room because of the cool green space, especially the view to take pictures.

Nhung has been attached to the room for 5 years now and plans to stay there until she gets married.
