Turn on the turn signal before changing lanes or direction.
Turn signals, also known as turn signals. Turning on this signal means notifying other road users that you want to turn left or right, so they can slow down and give way.
According to the provisions of the 2008 Road Traffic Law and the Decrees and Circulars guiding the implementation of the regulations, drivers of road motor vehicles must turn on their turn signals when changing direction or lanes.
Thus, if the regulations are not followed, the driver violates the Road Traffic Law and will be punished.
Penalty for not using turn signal
Accordingly, the act of not turning on the turn signal when changing direction or lane will be punished according to the provisions of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP.

For cars
Changing direction without signaling (except when driving along a curved road section where the road does not intersect at the same level): Fine from 800,000 VND - 1 million VND (point c, clause 3, Article 5).
In addition, the act of changing lanes without signaling: Fine from 400,000 - 600,000 VND (point a, clause 2, Article 5).
Changing lanes without signaling when driving on the highway: Fine from 3 to 5 million VND (point g, clause 5, Article 5). In addition, driver's license will be revoked for 1 to 3 months (point b, clause 11, Article 5).
For motorbikes
Changing direction without signaling (except when driving along a curved road section where the road does not intersect at the same level): Fine from 400,000 - 600,000 VND (Point a, Clause 3, Article 6).
In addition, the act of changing lanes without signaling: Fine from 100,000 - 200,000 VND (point i, clause 1, Article 6).
Is it illegal to use turn signals late?
Turning on the turn signal late is determined when the vehicle turns on the turn signal after changing direction or lane. In case the error of turning or changing lane without turning on the turn signal is determined, the penalty is stipulated in Article 6 of Decree s171/2013/ND-CP.
Accordingly, for drivers of motorbikes, scooters, and similar vehicles (including electric scooters): Fine from 200,000 - 400,000 VND.
For car drivers: Fine from 400,000 - 600,000 VND.
Will my papers be kept if I don't turn on the turn signal?
According to Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, amended and supplemented by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP, if the driver violates the error of not using the turn signal, depending on the case, the driver may face having his/her driving license revoked.
For motorbikes: The driver's license will not be revoked, but the vehicle registration may be temporarily confiscated. After paying the fine, the vehicle registration will be returned to the driver.
For cars, the driver's driving license will be revoked in the following cases:
- Vehicle fails to signal when overtaking or changing lanes on the highway: Driver's license revoked for 1 to 3 months.
- Vehicle does not signal before stopping/parking or when changing lanes on the highway and causes an accident: Driver's license will be revoked for 2 to 4 months.
