The Hmong flute is a traditional musical instrument, made mainly from bamboo and wood, with a simple design but extremely rich sound. According to legend, the flute is considered a gift from the gods, bringing peace and happiness to the user. The flute is made from 6 bamboo tubes attached to a wooden gourd, each bamboo tube has a bronze reed attached to create a distinct sound, blending into unique melodies. The craftsman must carefully select the materials, from the stage of choosing bamboo and wood to adjusting the reed to create a suitable sound. Making the flute has become a traditional profession, preserved and passed down from generation to generation.

Artisan Giang Su Giang in Hang Phu Loa village, Mo De commune has more than 40 years of experience in making and performing the art of Mong panpipes. He shared: "Mong panpipes have a long history, closely associated with the life and spirituality of the Mong people.

The sound of the Khen is not only for entertainment but also for stories and legends about ancestors, about heaven and earth. The Khen is a bridge between the earthly world and the gods, between humans and nature. The process of making the Khen is very elaborate. I often choose old bamboo trees of different sizes and corresponding wooden gourds to make large and small Khen accordingly. Each step from choosing materials, cutting, assembling to adjusting the sound requires meticulousness and patience. I spend a lot of time testing the sound, so that each bamboo tube emits the clearest and most melodious sound.

Every festival, the sound of the Mong flute echoes throughout the mountains and forests. In festivals such as the Lunar New Year, flute festivals or worship rituals, the flute is often used to perform, creating a special mark for important events in community life. Artisan Giang Su Giang shared more: "The flute not only appears in festivals but is also a part of daily life.

In the evenings, young people in the village often gather together, play the Khen, sing, and tell stories. The Khen helps us communicate, connect, and preserve traditional culture. The Hmong Khen is also a means to express love. Many young men and women have used the sound of the Khen to express their feelings, creating beautiful memories in their love.

Through the Khen music, love becomes more romantic and profound, expressing the thoughts and feelings of the Mong people. The sound of the Khen is also associated with legends and fairy tales, reflecting the spiritual life and cultural identity of the nation. In 2023, the Khen art of the Mong people in Yen Bai province was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is an honor and pride for the Mong people in general and the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai in particular.

To preserve the art of the Mong panpipe, Mu Cang Chai district has implemented many activities, focusing on teaching activities; organizing cultural exchange events, raising awareness and encouraging the younger generation to participate in preserving and promoting the art of the Mong panpipe. The sound of the Mong panpipe will forever echo in the mountains and forests with the joint efforts of the Mong ethnic community in Mu Cang Chai.

The Khen is not only a musical instrument but also a means for the Mong people to communicate with the gods, praying for a bountiful harvest, health and happiness. Traditional dances combined with the melodious sound of the Khen create a vivid picture, expressing the harmony between humans and nature, between spirituality and real life.
