Winning the gold medal in this event was host country athlete Lan Xing-yu of China (15,433 points) and winning the bronze medal was athlete Wataru Tanigawa (Japan, 14,300 points).
Khanh Phong achieved this achievement after teammates Trinh Hai Khang and Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien competed unsuccessfully in the finals of the freestyle gymnastics and vault events.
The 21-year-old athlete was assessed to have performed impressively, with a high level of difficulty and good landing.
Thus, this is the first medal of the Vietnamese gymnastics team at the 19th ASIAD and the third medal of the Vietnamese sports delegation on the competition day of September 28.
Earlier in the day, the shooting team had won 1 gold medal (men's 10m air pistol) and 1 bronze medal (men's 10m air pistol team).
Khanh Phong's silver medal is also the first silver medal for Vietnamese gymnastics since athlete Phan Thi Ha Thanh won in the balance beam event in 2014.
