Priceless spiritual food

The period 1946 - 1954 was a very important historical period and especially important for the press, because this was the first period when the country's press was independent and free, entering the resistance war against French colonialism with a new status. No matter how difficult it was, every journalist during this period tried their best, leaving a strong mark in the history of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press.

It can be said that during this period, most journalists, in addition to the usual working tools, carried backpacks, hoes, and shovels to dig trenches. Many press agency reporters also carried broadcasting equipment, radios, printers, etc. from the rear to the evacuation areas, to start a new fight, a new phase.

Press publications during the resistance war against French colonialism and the Dien Bien Phu victory.

Sharing about the valuable documents searched for and preserved at the museum, journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa - In charge of the Vietnam Press Museum said: “Not only did they do journalism in deep tunnels, but they also did journalism in thatched houses with bamboo walls in the middle of the forest, climbing mountains and wading streams every day, writing and making paper at the same time. Like journalist Thep Moi at Nhan Dan Newspaper, during this period, he had to walk dozens of kilometers continuously on hills and mountains to bring articles back for the Editor-in-Chief to review. The artifacts shed light on the stories, with the difficulties, hardships, and dangers that generations of journalists during the resistance war against the French overcame to achieve the Dien Bien Phu victory.

It was also during this difficult period that Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School was established (April 4, 1949). This was the first and only place to teach journalism during the resistance war. Within just 3 months of its establishment, it had added a team of professionally trained journalists to serve propaganda during the resistance war. And within those 3 months, Uncle Ho came twice to send letters of encouragement. That means that Uncle Ho always cared about the resistance press and the resistance journalists.

Journalist Kim Hoa also emphasized that, it was during that difficult but heroic period that many major newspapers were born, such as: Nhan Dan Newspaper, Quan Doi Nhan Dan Newspaper, Cong An Nhan Dan Newspaper, or even Van Nghe Newspaper was born during this period. Reporters of news agencies all took on the task of resistance and national construction, both collecting news from battles and producing press publications right on the battlefield. In fact, many journalists not only produced news, they also drew pictures and composed poems about the battles and heroic examples in the Dien Bien Phu victory. Perhaps it was during that difficult and arduous period that there were attractive press works, guiding propaganda and agitation work. Each journalist and reporter carried out their duties in difficult and deprived conditions... but what they left behind and preserved created values for future generations.

Korean journalists visit the Vietnam Journalism Museum.

Recalling the occasions of collecting artifacts and documents about journalism during the resistance war against French colonialism, journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa - Head of the Vietnam Press Museum said: “When we went to Tuyen Quang province, we were extremely impressed by the story of carrying newspapers, loudspeaker newspapers, that is, there were newspapers carried on the shoulders of women hundreds of kilometers from the rear to the war zone and to the public. They brought loudspeakers and radios to listen to and read the newspaper while walking. The press during this period not only informed about the fighting and production activities but also participated in many propaganda activities and major movements of our Party and State such as: the popular education movement; the movement against hunger and illiteracy…”.

Leaving great lessons about journalism

The press not only accompanied the cause of defending the Fatherland, during the long years of resistance against French colonialism, even during the days of the Dien Bien Phu campaign, there were articles and photos that recorded heroic historical moments, reflecting the most realistic and vivid developments of the Dien Bien Phu campaign and 56 days and nights of steadfast fighting.

The articles talked about the daily life, the brave fighting examples of the soldiers, the experience of digging tunnels, organizing logistics, investigative reports on the health of the soldiers, the problems of the soldiers' rear during the land reform; Uncle Ho's letters of encouragement to the soldiers, instructions from superiors... Each article seemed to be soaked in the sweat, tears, and blood of those who held guns on the Dien Bien Phu battlefield. Many reporters and collaborators braved the dangers on the battlefield, were present at the hot spots, and exploited the best and most unique details.

Delegates visit the Vietnam Press Museum.

Journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa said: “We thought that with hardships and difficulties, the press would only be able to operate to a certain extent. But in reality, through research and collection of artifacts, we found that this period, in terms of quantity and scale, left behind great lessons in journalism, the greatest of which was determination, strength, and development in all contexts, in the especially difficult circumstances of the resistance war against French colonialism.”

“With a spirit of solidarity, the news agencies all went to war, reporting in the context of the extremely difficult and deprived resistance war, even though they lived in thatched houses, had to climb mountains and wade through streams and had to make their own paper… Stories cannot fully describe the hardships that generations of journalists overcame during the resistance war against the French, thereby leading to the victory of Dien Bien Phu. Each journalistic work, each newspaper became invaluable spiritual food for our soldiers even in the most difficult, deprived and arduous fighting conditions. For the Vietnam Press Museum, we are very grateful to those who not only contributed to the resistance war against the French but also made the Dien Bien Phu victory, a golden milestone in the history of the nation” - journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa shared more.

It can be said that today, every visitor to the Press Museum, seeing the artifacts and documents about the resistance war against French colonialism in general and the Dien Bien Phu victory in particular, will appreciate and be grateful for the great sacrifices of the previous generation. Each artifact on display will be a story that the Vietnam Press Museum wishes to express gratitude to the previous generation and pass on to the next generation...
