On the morning of October 23, the 16th International Scientific Conference on the East Sea with the theme "Orienting thinking, promoting standards" co-organized by the Diplomatic Academy and partner agencies opened in Ha Long City.

The workshop was attended by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Hai Binh, Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Magazine; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet; nearly 300 delegates attended in person and more than 250 delegates registered to attend online. The workshop also brought together nearly 50 speakers who are prestigious experts from 23 countries and international organizations; nearly 100 delegates from foreign representative agencies in Vietnam and 22 Ambassadors.

At the opening session of the workshop, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet delivered a keynote speech, in which he highly appreciated the theme of the workshop “Orienting thinking, promoting standards”, demonstrating the current topicality and urgency of issues at sea and in the ocean, including the East Sea; affirming that compliance with widely recognized principles and standards is the foundation for ensuring international peace and stability and is also a common framework for countries to resolve disputes peacefully and cooperatively. At the same time, he emphasized that Vietnam is ready to contribute to the activities of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS); demonstrating a strong and steadfast commitment to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in particular and compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law in general.

After the opening session, the 16th International Scientific Conference on the East Sea will organize 7 discussion sessions on various topics surrounding the East Sea issues. In addition to the 7 main sessions, the Conference also has 2 introductory sessions with important introductory presentations by prestigious experts and leaders from many countries.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Organizing Committee will also hold a special session with the theme “Young Generation and Maritime Security” to seek young faces, the next generation in researching the East Sea issue. Notably, for the first time, the “ASEAN Roundtable” program will be held to connect leading experts in Southeast Asia to discuss opportunities to promote regional cooperation.

The workshop will take place on October 23 and 24, 2024.
